With Georges St. Pierre's recent win over Matt Hughes, it seems that Pierre has become a dominant opponent for nearly everyone in the Welterweight division. This poses problems of who will be able to matchup against Pierre in the future, much like the situation with Anderson Silva at Middleweight. We'll look at the current situation in the Welterweight division, comparisons to the Middleweights, and fixes that the UFC can implement to reclaim a challenging upper tier of matchups for the division. All of that and more in this edition of MMA Analytics.

I've been thinking that this is one div I can always count on!?? Here is an article that claims it will be stagnant but I care to differ. On top of the guys he mentioned there is also Swick, Burkman, Alves, and Davis...give any of these guys 2-3 wins in a row and you've got a guy deserving of a title shot. Not to mention the other guys they could bring in to stir the pot, like Fickett, Diaz, and Neer. Not to mention the upstarts in the last TUF season, Koppenhaven and Rollins stole me in their fight!! I think the WW Div is still a clasic stand by for me!

Jon Fitch, Josh Burkman, Mike Swick, Karo Parysian (Very Over due), Diego Sanchez (Still dangerous don't write him off because of a couple loses), Josh Koscheck (Yes even though GSP beat him), and the UFC will bring in a couple other big welterweight names in 2008.
So I wouldn't worry too much about the division being stagnant.

Karo deserves a shot. Fitch could be thrown into the mix, possibly a Karo/Fitch fight for a shot at the title.
I think it's time to bring back Nick Diaz. Robbie Lawler should be brought back as well, but for the MW division.
They also should look at signing Nick Thompson and Jake Shields. The talent will come. There's absolutely nothing to worry about. The talent level now is vastly improving over talent from the past.
After seeing GSP destroy Frank Trigg, I knew, and told my friends, that he WILL hold the title, and be a dominant force for years to come. He is amazingly talented and for him to outwrestle Hughes says a lot. Hughes actually trained good for this fight, but he couldn't do anything agaisnt GSP, who in practice was taking Rashad Evans down at will, but not being taken down himself.

sigh this article is a bit off ... the one thing im dying to see is champ vs champ st pierre vs penn ... that would be a good fight and i either see penn wining by rear naked choke or stpierre by lay and pray ... even though he rarley uses these tactics just saying when ur on top of penn if u commit 2 attack 2 much ur gona end up in a sub but yea thats the fight i wanna see ... and st pirre vs fitch :D
I'm surprised you said Burkman and not Karo. He at least needs a shot at it, whether he can phase GSP or not. Fitch is getting real close to title shot as well. maybe diego sanchez if he bounces back.
Leland Rolling, said writer, is a grade A retard. There are multiple title fights waiting in the division that will have no thoughts entering anyones minds of the division being stagnant.
In fact there are too many fighters deserving of a shot that the exact opposite is true.
At what point did journalism logic start following the spaghetti test. That article did not stick.
Wow, I just finished reading the article. The writer goes further to say that the Welterweight Division is not even worth weighing in on, and that GSP will demolish Serra.
1 win in a row by a fighter who is an "interim" title holder and the division is horrible because of lack of talent?
Journalism should be unbiased. This is pathetic.
Leland, if this is you, the writer, posting above me on the playground. It is time to consider a different career if you can't remove your own personal biased blinders when writing articles.
Pathetic.

This is one of the strongest divisions along with LHW IMO. I don't know what this guy is talking about there are tons of title fights that could happen and be good, and a bunch of guys they could bring back or sign to make the division even more interesting. I'd like to see Miller back among others personally, but yeah, I don't agree with the article at all.
