You smell that? That's October baseball.
The
American League is sewn up:
Boston Red Sox - AL East - 94-64 (.595)
New York Yankees - AL Wild Card - 91-67 (.576)
Cleveland Indians - AL Central - 94-64 (.595)
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - AL West - 92-67 (.579)
So right now, I think it's Red Sox-Angels and Indians-Yankees in the 5-game Division Series.
The
National League is still up in the air, with 7 teams still slugging it out for the 4 spots:
New York Mets,
Philadelphia Phillies,
Chicago Cubs,
Milwaukee Brewers,
Arizona Diamondbacks,
San Diego Padres, and the
Colorado Rockies.

What a start to the playoffs. Colorado over San Diego, 9-8 in 13 innings in the 163rd game of the regular season, to decide the NL Wild Card. Stayed up late to watch the big finish, as Trevor Hoffman imploded.
Now on to the important stuff, the American League Division Series.

Josh Beckett, BOS 200.7 189 76 73 17 40 194 139
John Lackey, LAA 224.0 219 87 75 18 52 179 144
BOS lineup: 5.35 R/G, 352 2B, 166 HR, .279-.362-.444
LAA lineup: 5.07 R/G, 324 2B, 123 HR, .284-.345-.417
I have to follow my heart and pick Boston in this first game. Lackey has been horrible at Fenway Park over the years, and the first game of the playoffs is going to be like walking into Hell. If you've ever been to Fenway Park, you know how loud it gets. In 2 starts against the Red Sox this year, both of them in Boston, Lackey gave up 20 hits and 10 runs in 9.2 innings.
Meanwhile, David Ortiz has hit .410 over the last 28 days, with 9 bombs and 23 RBIs. Big Papi has hit .365, with a .470 OBP and a .700 SLG at home this season. And he's pwned Lackey over his career, with a 1.275 OPS in 30 PAs. Boom, shake the room.

C.C. Sabathia, CLE 241.0 238 94 86 20 37 209 138
NYY lineup: 5.98 R/G, 326 2B, 201 HR, .290-.366-.463
CLE lineup: 5.01 R/G, 305 2B, 178 HR, .268-.343-.428
I'm picking Cleveland in the 1st game. The Yankees have always hit Sabathia well, but they haven't faced him since 2004. He's a strong contender for the Cy this year, and he's pitching at home. The Jake has been a marginal pitcher's park this year, although Sabathia has pitched about equally well on the road.
Yankee hater in the house!
I'm hoping to see a Cleveland/Chicago World Series. One town goes crazy with a world series ring and the other town is heartbroken yet again.
How pissed would ESPN be if LA and Cleveland beat Boston and NY? They might have to cancel baseball tonight because they won't want to talk about any other teams.
