Matt Serra: ‘I’m definitely up for’ fighting Georges St. Pierre in April

“I’m definitely up for that…. I’ve got to be realistic. I don’t know what they’re going to do. I feel like I’m friendly with everybody but business is business and who knows? I know they like Georges, it’s not that they don’t like me but I don’t know. He might be more of a better poster boy. Who knows? … just put the little Italian guy in Canada. That’s me. I like it, I like it, man. I take no offence at people in Canada yelling for me to die.”

Good to hear that Matt doesn't mind fighting in GSP's backyard. I doubt the fans will be sceaming obsenities at him or threatening his life, there are just not many Canadians like that..... but, everyone is going to go absolutly nutz for GSP, there will be no question who the home town boy is.

It's too bad Serra didn't talk about how his back is doing, I haven't really heard anything on that subject since I heard that he couldn't attend the finals for TUF due to his back and the plane ride and that he was going to be hosting the party for UFC 79 in New York. Did anyone attend that and see how he was doing?

Yeah seams like they are being real quite about it. Which isn't a good thing if you ask me. I'm not real confident he is going to be ready by April.

its the same thing they did with silva vs franklin 2, who knows, it might backfire on them, but i think higher than the reason of them wanting GSP to win, they want to have a good show in Canada, with as many canadian fighters since its their first show, and what candian is more popular than GSP.... its for the same reason why Bisping was on the card for the show in england, people want to see their homeland fighters to take part when the UFC comes to their country....

I dont think its the UFC wanting GSP to win the fight as much as it has to do with how they want the show in Canada to do well and the best way to do that is have the best hometown guy to fight on the card so the fans can chant for the guy from their backyard.

Having Rich fight against Silva in Ohio wasn't UFC playing favorites it was trying to draw the biggest crowd possible. Same with the Britian shows having Bisping on the card. He's the guy that brings the Brits to the fight.

In the long run I don't think the UFC cares about who is the champion as much as they care about the money they make by putting on the shows.

If the show was scheduled to be in NJ they would want Serra on the card as he would bring the fans and so on so I see no disrespect for Serra and the crowd plays little into the head of Serra as I think it would effect GSP's game much more as he would be the heavy favorite again with more pressure then the first fight ever had on it. Say GSP looses again then what.....wow come to think about it I really don't want this in Canada with GSP's weak mind.

Heres hoping this doesn't work against GSP like i think it will as it might be as much of a disadvantage if not more to GSP as it is would be to Serra.

No, the UFC wants to continue to build its brand in Canada and having its first UFC event in the Great White North in Montreal, with GSP as the headliner will do just that. GSP is fairly well known here, not a household name but at the very least if you said to the average Canadian who is GSP, most would be able to tell you that he was a fighter of some sort. This event could change that to him being a household name, our sporting channels already cover mma quite heavily and this fight will get hyped by the mainstream press like you wouldn't believe. Its a VERY smart move on the UFC's part.

PS Tuvok I'm so jealous of you being so close! I'm still trying to figure out if I can get out to Montreal for this, I've got a couple of Tim Horton's out here in Victoria and with the labour shortages we hare having now it will be tough, but dammit! I'm going to make this happen

If Cro Cop's on this card, I need somewhere to stay because I'd be there if I had to sell my car.

Serra talks about his injury you just have to follow the second link "Canadian Press". He talks about for a while his wife had to put on his shoes for him. He also made comments about how much weight he has gained....it may be a tough cut for him depending on how much he has really gained. I think he needs to drop weight classes anyways...he just looks soft at 170.

Thanks Jae, missed that link when I read the original story, good to see it has a bit more info on Serra's injury. Great to here he as at least gotten back to the gym to start some light training again. Here's hoping that his back is doing well and he's at 100% or very close to it for the fight in April. I also agree with Serra, no matter what happens with this fight, Matt Vs. Matt has to happen, hell they put the division on hold for 6 months and hyped the rivalry like crazy. Both the fighters and the fans want to see this.

This will be a really hard fight to watch for me, I nearly cried when he Knocked out GSP, He can still do it again, I think GSP will smash him, But that's what I thought last time too.

He will be in GSP's head big time for this fight, That just might win it for him.
Georges will be so carefull he might not perform to his best.

We will find out in april I guess!

WAR GSP!!!!

Serra doesnt care when he fights, Dana already paid him enough to fake an injury so that the UFC debut in Canada had a headlier that would bring in the most cash . I mean come on, theres no one else for GSP to fight, and who wants to see Jason Mcdonald or kalib starnes in the main event? Im driving 8 hours for this event, and without GSP, it would be just another PPV I ordered at home.

Emfleek wants GSP to squash Serra.

I dunno man, I wouldn't say it's so much disrespect as you may think. It's just that it's their first event in Canada, and who better to put in that event than the Canadian that most every Canadian loves (and most USA MMA fans). They aren't allowed in New York yet, which is Serra's hometown. If it were possible for them to do it in NY too, and picked Canada instead, then I could see that as a little disrespect... then again, I'm sure there are more Canadians into MMA than there are New Yorkers so it'd have a bigger draw.... but that's just a guess.

Well considering that Serra holds the real UFC title and they are putting him in a fight were the challenger is fighting in his home country i definately wouldnt be happy if i was Serra.....DUMBASS

I really do think that they are disrespecting Matt Serra. No doubt about it.

He does the season of TUF. Ok so maybe that kept the WW title on the shelf for awhile but that wasn't Matt Serra who decided to do that. The UFC decided to do that.

Then he gets hurt in training, MMA is a combat sport so training injuries happen all the time. The were real quick about setting an interim title up. They didn't have an interim title when GSP was injured. Look at the Sherk situation and everything that happened before they finally decided to go with an interim title. All that stuff between Couture and Dana White and we just got definite word of an interim title bout, and it is still 2 months away.

I'd bet you anything that if Rampage were to get hurt between TUF and his fight with Griffin they wouldn't setup an interim title.

The UFC shown us that they have their favorites and if you aren't one of them you'll be treated like some sort of bastard child.

This will be the only time I don't have a big party at my house for the UFC. I am scared that somebody might be a Serra fan and I would go to jail for killing them.

Scary fight. Hope GPS can dominate him. Only takes one punch just like last time so GSP needs to have a flawless fight like he did with matt whose?

Disrespect would be holding the first UFC event in Canada and not having GSP on the card.

They had Anderson vs Rich in Rich's hometown. Or maybe it's different when it goes against someone you might like?

Oh and one more thing, GSP has his name chanted even when he fights in the US, so how would fighting in Canada be any different? ... other than the chants will be louder.

Serra is being a little optimistic by thinking he is going to be ready in less than 4 months.

He can't even put his own socks on according to him , how in the world does he think he can be ready for GSP by April??

Sorry but Serra is just HOPING he'll be ready but I can't see it.

If you read the article he said he couldn't put on his own socks for the first couple of weeks. He's now back in the gym training, but we shall have to wait and see if his body is going to be ready for April.

He's going to get destroyed! GSP will have a better mind state. He's better in every aspect of MMA besides maybe BJJ since Serra I think might have a black belt? GSP is going to kill him...

Well considering that Silva if from Brazil and UFC is not doing events in Brazil i would consider any place they would have fought in the US to be hometown for Franklin....And they can always push back their debut in Canada until after the Serra GSP fight.....And by the way i am not a Serra fan so lets not get confused....
