Matchmaking, as any good talent relations chair will tell you, involves a great deal more than just coming up with an exciting fight.

Like Kasparov staring down a chessboard, matchmaking involves thinking three or four moves ahead, preparing promotional strategies for all possible outcomes and determining what a match result will mean for business a year or more down the road -- not to mention navigating the myriad of contractual, personal and physical issues that can undermine plans.

It's a thankless job. Credit for a good fight goes to the athletes, and blame for a somnolent mess falls on the beleaguered matchmaker. (Fun fact: Joe Silva began his UFC career at a sturdy 6-foot-2. True story.)

Thankfully, this space doesn't need to concern itself with responsible thinking. To that end, here are eight bouts that would make 2008 a happier new year for fans.

meh...

Fedor/Barnett, I could not care less about this fight. This would turn into a 3 round (probably split decision) bore just like Nog/Fedor and Nog/Barnett.

Silva/Vitor; At least this fight has excitement written all over it, but think Vitor would have to prove himself against another top LHW before deserving of this fight (or another silva loss).

Le/Lawler: I would like to see this fight. Somebody's getting KO'd!

Lesnar/Herring: Don't think this would be a very exciting fight. Lesnar has to get by Mir first.

Sanchez/Huerta: This would be a great fight, and makes sense for a next fight for Huerta.

Machida/Ortiz: I think this fight would a slap in the face to Machida. Ortiz does not deserve a fight this good at this point. Machida should be moving up the ladder--not down.

GSP/Fitch: This would be a great fight. I think this will happen too, as nobody seems like they can beat Fitch right now, until.....

Silva/Henderson vs Lindland: Would love to see this, but don't think it will ever happen. Lindland, I think is more into his teaching and IFL league right now to ever commit to a UFC contract with Dana (who he hates).

...just my $0.02.

Good matchups, but the one that really drew my attention was GSP Vs Fitch. Fitch has been destroying guys and definitely deserves a title shot.

Ortiz Machida would be good, Ortiz would bring the fight to machida and test machida off his back which would be good. Better than a Jardine Machida snoozefest. Thiago Silva v. Jardine would be good.
