HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Mark Kerr emerged victorious for the first time in over seven years, submitting Stephen Gavin via keylock at 1:19 of the first round Wednesday night at Xcess Fighting.

The 39-year-old heavyweight, who fought for the UFC and PRIDE promotions from 1997-2004, last won in 2000 at PRIDE 10 against an inexperienced Igor Borisov.

In 1997, Kerr appeared to be destined to become an MMA great. He kicked off his MMA career winning three fights in one night at the World Vale Tudo Championship 3 and then following up with two straight UFC tournament wins at UFC 14 and 15. He cashed in on his success five months later by signing with PRIDE, where he would call home for almost six years.

It's good, no great, to see Mark Kerr win again. Although I've never heard of this dude before, it's good to see The Smashing Machine back in the win column.

The guy he beat was 3-1 before fighting Kerr and his wins were over guys with records of 0-4, 21-21, 0-2 and a loss to a guy who is 5-10.

Basically this is a win over a can. I like Kerr, but he hasn't moved up in my "list" based on this win. I hope he gets back into a respectable state and retires on a higher note.

Maybe you should retire. Who are you to say when fighters should retire? Once they retire, it's hard as hell to get back. Kerr was gone for awhile, and it's good to see him back.

I will never tell a fighter when to retire. That is the fighter's choice. Like I would have loved to see Lennox Lewis fight more, but he retired when the time was right for him.
