a lot of people seem to have forgotten about perhaps the greatest champion in ufc history and im wondering why.
maybe its that people think gsp exposed him as a past his prime fighter and he followed that up with a somewhat listless match with lytle, or his attitude on TUF made him look like a bit of an a-hole, maybe its just the lack of activity due to the TUF filming. whatever the reason, every time someone mentions a WW match up or an up and comer against top dogs hes nowhere to be seen in the threads.
for my money hes still one of the best in the world, and would be favored against any WW with the exception of maybe GSP. IMO were he and gsp to fight again it would be about 50/50. i dont see him standing and trading with gsp as much as the last fight and i think there would be a lot more TD attempts with one of them getting it to the ground. i know gsp stuffed him despite hughes having his arms locked around him, and in the kos fight gsp once again showed his great TD defense, but hughes is as crafty as they come and should come into this fight knowing he needs to take it down. also he seemed a bit overconfident against st pierre in their last fight and i dont see that happening again.
my guess is that he will be the WW champ going into the new year, although i think serra is vastly underrated, and we will see him defend against gsp for a 3rd time. so will this be a one and done title reign or will the guy retain his old form and once again rule what is maybe the toughest division in the UFC(LHW and LW are right there too)? an why has he seemingly become an afterthought in the WW division?

matt hughes is awesome imo go matt
I'm a big Matt Hughes fan.....
For some reason his personality (which I don't think is all that bad) really gets people going. Maybe it's because he's a guy from a small town and people don't really relate to that.
As far as his fighting goes, I really don't know why people wouldn't like watching him fight. Sure, he does his damage on the mat but he's provided some of the most memorable moments in the UFC with his slams and ground and pound.
I still think he should be in the arguement for best 170lb. fighter in the world. IMO, GSP in the ONLY guy you could rank ahead of him (I have GSP #1 WW).
But I agree, that I don't know why people doubt him so much. Probably because he doesn't box that well and doesn't really have KO quality striking. His strength and cardio are top notch and hard to deal with. If he gets you to the ground, more times than not, you are not getting up and you are going to get beat down.
I'm hoping Hughes defeats Serra and we get to see him go up against the likes of GSP, BJ Penn, & Kos over the next couple of years.

I'm almost sad that Matt Serra is having to fight Matt Hughes. I know deep down that Matt Hughes is probably gonna run him over and take back his belt, but I want Serra to win. Matt Hughes will get plenty of love come TUF 6 and his title match.
And why do so many people think that Matt Hughes is a ****? He's probably the nicest fighter ever, and probably the most humble as well.

Spot on.
Matt Hughes is the man. I rank him #1. He's 1-1 with GSP and employed a bad strategy in their last fight. I pick him in the rubber match.
He will be champ again, and is one of the greatest of all time. Definitely the greatest champion the UFC has ever had. Too bad kids judge fighters by attitude and every little thing they say or do instead of actual skill. I think that's why he's not getting the respect he deserves. He accomplished much more then anyone at that weight in the UFC.

He needs to move up to middleweight.

He needs to move up to middleweight.
Didn't he say he would possibly move up to Middleweight to fight Anderson Silva for the belt? The only thing is, he won't have any real competition, because he won't fight Rich Franklin, and the only other person to fight is Anderson Silva. The welterweight is a much deeper weight class and I think he should stay there and regain his WW belt, then maybe move up to MW and win that belt too.

That would be an excellent way to end his already illustrious career.

I've still got mad love for Hughes. He's still my number one ranked WW.
Sometimes his attitude can be a little annoying, but I can't deny his skill nor his domination. The guy walks at around 185-190 lbs and benches 450.... he's an absolute animal.
I won't take him off number one until he and GSP fight again. GSP will move to 1 if he beats him once more

that's what Hughes wanted to do beat GSP in there second fight then move up to beat Anderson Silva then retire, looks like he'll have to beat Serra, then face GSP, and idk if he's still feeling good enough to beat Anderson

To tell the turth i have kind of thought less of him with that loss with gsp and then that shitty ass win over lytle.I mean dont get me wrong he is still in the top 5 for ww easy but he needs to step it up and just totally dominate serra in december.

matt hughes is the man, i think most people are bigger fans of GSP and think that hughes is just a jerk. its pretty funny to me that so many people on these forums whine that hughes doesnt deserve a title shot after one decision win but nobody says anything when GSP gets a title shot for the same kind of win, dominate for three rounds. being the most dominant champion in ufc history has to count for something and i believe hughes and GSP are deserving of their title shots. matt wont use the same stratedgy this time around and i cant wait to see hughes vs pierre 3!!!
