With UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones (13-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) injured, UFC officials now are targeting a bout between the champ's original opponent, Rashad Evans (15-1-1 MMA, 10-1-1 UFC), and replacement Phil Davis (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC).

Sources today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the new matchup, which is expected to take place at UFC 133. The Canadian Press' Neil Davidson first reported the opponent switch.

A source told MMAjunkie.com that Jones is facing a lengthy recovery from a torn right-hand ligament suffered in his title win. A timetable for his return wasn't immediately available.

I am probably as frustrated as Rashad Evans right now! Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back.

May 2010 - Shogun Rua KO's Machida for UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Suffers a knee injury. First title defense over ten months later on March 19th, 2011.

September 2010 - Jose Aldo beats Manny Gamburyan, becoming the last WEC Featherweight Champion. Is given the UFC Featherweight Championship. Out of action for seven months until first title defense on April 30th, 2011.

October 2010 - Cain Velasquez beats Brock Lesnar for the UFC HW title. Six months later Cain doesn't even have a date to defend his title.

December 2010 - Dominick Cruz beats Scott Jorgensen to become the last WEC and first UFC Bantamweight Champion. First defense not until July 2nd, 2011.

And now this...... You know what I'd love to see? Someone win the a and defend it in like 2-3 months. I'd also love to see a title defended or fought for more than twice a year.

Anderson Silva destroyed Vitor Belfort on February 5th, 2011. He didn't take one punch, from what I recall. He fights Yushin Okami on August 27th, 2011. You really need six months to recover from a fight where you didn't even get hit? I mean, I know that scramble will take at least three months to catch your breath from....

Addendum - Does anyone think this is a good move for Davis? I could've sworn he was looking to take most of the year off and work on his skill set. Now he's fighting the No. 1 contender, former LHW champion? I would bet 'Shad handles Davis soundly. I was really hoping they would bring Davis along a little more gradually. Granted after beating Little Nog, this is the level of competition you find yourself in...

and this is why ufc cant wait to fold SF...injuries hurt cards..pay perviews salesand really the same amount of money is spent on production...I still think a fighter on stand by like I have said before is a great idea too..>cause as a fan I hate beinghyped for a fight then something go wrong..>This way at least I can already have an idea of whos stepping in...

Whats bad for rashad too is I bet by the time Jones gets better it will be someone else that fights him because of schedule conflicts...

with the right game plan, davis will win this fight. but im gonna pick rashad. i wonder where rashad is gonna train at for this. if theres any chance hes gonna come back to murcielago where he first started then thats where im headed :D

I thought I read somewhere Davis was taking some time off? So I'm guessing the winner gets a title shot then? Interesting fight, kind of sucks for Rashad but oh well. Good for Davis stepping up. I actually think he has a great shot at beating Rashad after his long lay off.

Not so sure about that after the trouble he had with Lil Nog...I think Rashad would possibly beat Lil Nog worse than Davis...

UFC is in need of more elite fighters for sure...ANd to be more careful in matchmaking....I woudl have never put Bader against Jon Jones they both were up and coming.....

Davis took the fight with Nog on short notice. He never was in trouble during the whole fight, and adapted whenever his double wasn't working. Davis's wrestling is far better than Rashad's. Rashad has a tendency to get rocked , and Davis hasn't had his chin tested yet. Rashad's layoff should factor in, and I look for Davis to win a decision. Even after a victory over Rashad if I was Phil I would look for a few more fights before Jones.

that sucks! Rashad should take this one based on his years of experience in the UFC.

After the Nog fight i thought Davis could have used some time to get better and i'm sure i read something to that effect as well. Props to him for stepping up but i see Rashad using experience to beat Davis by UD.

man that sucks, seems like the title holders only fight 1 maybe 2 times a year any ways. injuries suck and are unfortunate but damn this is crazy. every title holder takes 8 months off after they win it. it stalls the division and these guys are stuck waiting around or taking other fights. bummer for both Jones ans Evans.

I was thinking the other day about how often it seems that champs get injured after winning the title. I can't help but to think that maybe, (just maybe) the time off henders them more that it helps.
they want to be in top form for a title defense but sometimes I think it just turns out worse for them.

i have a feeling most of them get injured on the way up for a title, and just dont want to bow out while they're in contender positions. And then if they win the title, they have the perfect time to get surgery and they probably feel as if its about time that they go under, since they delayed it for so long in order to get the title.

I think Rashad takes this one easily via decision. The way Little Nog was able to stuff Davis' takedowns makes me unsure if he'll be able to even get Rashad down once.

davis via head kick causing rashads stanky leg to return. otherwise davis UD.

analysis

wrestling - phil can take rashad down and rashad cant take phil down. rashad won't throw kicks.

hands - rashad is better in the pocket but davis shows he can fight a guy like that (lil nog). just stay on the outside and throw that kick

if phil does get rashad on his back its trouble for rashad

rashads training camp seems to be in question which is a messy thing behind the scenes.

Little interest in this fight, could end up like rampage vs rashad with little action and more of a stalemate.

So much for Davis getting the time off for more training. Very disappointed. I just can't see him beating Evans.

Beg to differ the leg kick from Davis wont be effective and will leave himself vulnerable to a takedown...

Personally I am starting to believe this is BS....it seems every one of the title guys take a vacation after winning the title...I mean I guess they deserve it to a point thats what you worked for and once you get there why not take a few months to reflect and party then regroup...

What I dont understand I read somewhere it was his hand but also read hes been training with his brother...So which is really going on?
