I like the show, even though I agree with some of the criticisms. I have to wonder if the matches against these "champions" are somehow staged.
Last night's show was on Pankration. It's too bad I didn't know about it beforehand, I would've told people here about it.
For those who don't know,
Pankration is a weaponless, striking & grappling martial art developed by soldiers and gladiators in Greece between 600-700 B.C.
For comparison, Shaolin Kung Fu is believed to have developed around 600 A.D. Buddhist monks in China are believed to have practiced martial arts from sometime in the 5th Century A.D. Pankration even predates Muay Boran, which is the predecessor of Muay Thai (Tony Jaa supposedly used Muay Boran in the film
Ong Bak). Some people think Pankration is literally the world's first organized martial art.
Anyway, martial artists in Greece have tried to revive Pankration only within the last 20 years. Among other thing, they've used ancient Greek sculptures, painted vases, and wall murals to attempt to figure out the techniques. What strikes people today about Pankration is that it practically
is mixed martial arts.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, next week's episode is about
Krav Maga, which is probably about as far from MMA as you can get. Use Krav Maga in an MMA match, and you'll get disqualified. Maybe also arrested.
