As Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight prospect Roger Huerta heads into the home stretch of preparation for his fight with Kenny Florian at UFC 87, it would be understandable for the pressure to build. At 25, Huerta has managed to cement his reputation as a hard-hitting, never-say-die breed of fighter, even after an extended layoff from the game — when criticism tends to get louder.

Like many fights that materialize over time, it appears Huerta’s decision to step back into the Octagon was born out of a slight misunderstanding. During a post-fight interview, Florian mentioned him as a potential opponent. Huerta says that provided the motivation to return.

“I kind of heard that Kenny had called me out, (and) at the same time I started to get edgy, and I started to feel like I wanted to come back and fight again,” Huerta said.

Florian counters that he was simply giving his opinion on the division’s best match-up, but regardless, it was an interaction that bore fruit for serious fans of the sport.

Huerta has made a point of traveling to different camps for fresh perspectives, landing with UFC welterweight Georges St. Pierre’s camp for a finer lesson in the art of savaging his opponents. He’s taken well to St. Pierre’s round the clock attack, something he considers to be his greatest asset going into his fight with Florian.

I dont see him having as much success against 170er's as he does against the 155ers

So I'm confused was he going to retire or take a longer break from fighting??

In the end it doesn't matter because Zoo lander is going to finish him cuz thats what he does

He'll be a gatekeeper no matter where he moves.

his wrestling isnt good enough too take the bigger guys down (not even sure he can take the 155'ers down, not the ones at the top anyways)...and striking I think he'd get dummied by the likes of Alves, Johnson, Davis.

I'm sure he probably realizes the there isn't much chance of holding a belt at 155. But you would think that he's got enough sense to know that there is even less of a future for him at 170. Huerta is one of my favorite fighters to watch. He ALWAYS puts on a good show.

But I'm just not certain that he's got the total package that it takes to hold a belt in the UFC. There's no shame in that either, he's facing the best fighers in MMA. I really want him to pull out a win against Florian (mostly because no one deserves to win with a nickname like KenFlo, terrible). But I'm not to confident in Huerta's chances.

I'm not sure how many fights he's got left on his contract, or how bad he wants a belt, but he's a guy who could dominate at 155 in most other promotions.

Not a smart move for Huerta if he moves up. I don't think he'll do near as good at 170 as he does at 155. People are going to be bigger and stronger than him in that division and theres lots of good strong wrestlers at 170 that would take him down and control him with ease.

I'm disappointed in you teammate , I'm thinking in a year he will either have the title or at least get a shot, I don't think he'd beat BJ so this all depends on whether or not BJ leaves for welterweight.

Bad move if he moves to 170......A lot of strong wrestlers in that division i dont see him making it to far at 170....At 155 i see him being a contender and possibly earning a title shot, but i dont think he will ever hold the belt in eigther division....

Move up? Damn, if anything I'd thought he'd move down to 145.

First, Huerta hasn't done anything at 155 to justify moving up. He beats Clay Guida then all of the sudden he thinks he's a superstar. C'mon.

Second, if Penn is moving to 170, why the hell would Huerta follow him. His best bet would be to stay at 155 where he could have a real shot at the title.

The level of wrestling is much stronger at 170. I'm not sure Roger could hack it trying to take bigger guys down. other than that, his punches might have a little less affect and the ones he will be taking will be 10 fold stronger. Look at guys like Thiago Alves, Anthony Jonson, Fitch, GSP,Sanchez,Koscheck,Hughes. All of these guys would out power him i think. Even though he is a big 155. I think Kenny will beat him but that doesnt mean he should leave the div.

Roger just claims shit to get attention. Is that not obvious?
