How the hell did Goldberg end up a commentator for UFC?

He seems to have very limited knowledge of the sport. He calls almost every takedown a judo throw which offends me as a judo student. He misuses names for submissions and asks stupid questions.

It seems to me they should move Rogan to the announcer spot and bring Couture in as the expert when he retires. Not that I want him to retire but bringing him in as a commentator would soften the blow of losing Couture the fighter.

I agree with you completely, and have you noticed the way he will looking into joes eyes with his head tilted down and nod after everything joe says. The guy is a completle baffoon who makes his living pretending to have some sort of knowlage of sports. I recently caught an air race on FSN and heard that oh so familar voice... He knows even less about air racing than he does about UFC, but that doesn't stop him... i agree with you 100%

i think they could get someone better as the announcer than goldberg but i dont think they should get joe, i cant remember which ufc it was where he was the main guy and it didnt work at all

I agree that not only is Goldberg overdramatic and not at all knowledgeable, but he seems to have learned amazingly little about a sport he's been exposed to so much. Saying things like "that is the ultimate show of respect" whenever two guys touch gloves at the start of the round or "you cannot stress enough how technical Rich Franklin's standup is" actually detracts from the fighters IMO since it lessens the reaction when something special really does happen.

I think Rogan is great. He's enthusiatic, knowledable and seems to genuinely like the fighters and the fights he's watching. Plus he gives the UFC some credibility as a mainstream spectator sport by the fact that he's know as more than a fighter/fight commentator by the general public. Bas is also excellent and he works well with Quadros, but I'm not sure either one would compliment Rogan that well. My perfect UFC broadcast team would be Rogan and Jeff Blatnick. I'd like to see Bas and Quadros working the EliteXC events--you could get rid of the other Goldberg to make that one happen.

i like joe he may say stuff that isn't right or didffenrent way but he sounds good an ix excited non the less an brings some life to it they could just and randy to it 3 people is fine to do events wouldnt be the same with out him

Haha I guess I'm the only one who likes both Rogan and Goldberg. I don't have anything bad to say about them and I enjoy every commentary from them.
Both slip a few times every show but that doesn't bother me.

Wouldn't be the UFC without either of them. At least they don't want to touch their fighters with their 25 cm poles.

Yea Goldberg And Joe are the voice of the UFC. It would be weird without him. He says some dumb stuff but i think him and Joe are great together.

Goldberg is good for the novice MMA fan. He asks questions that the novice might be thinking. I really think that Goldie knows more about the sport than he may lead on. The perfect example is when he and joe were talking about Bispings win over Hamill. It was pretty damn obvious Goldberg knew what was going on and was cought off guard when Joe mentioned Bispings "win"... Goldie shook his head in disagreement. Anyway, I like him and I think Joe is awesome most of the time too.

He has little knowlage of MMA, but he adds comedy to it.

I don't want to argue too harshly against the people who like Goldberg. You're opinions are as valid as mine. But what other sport uses a guy with no knowledge as a sidekick? Even the non-playing commentators I hear in boxing, football, etc. seem to be at least expert fans. And Rogan is a bit wacky himself so if anything he should be paired with more of a straightedged partner IMO. That team is kind of like putting Madden in with Carrot Top and saying Carrot Top is good because he asks questions that people who don't know anything about football would ask and he's funny when he calls the plays incorrectly.

Yeah, this thought has occurred to me. But he asks questions like, "you think Sherk will look to take it to the ground?" or "you think Cro Cop wants to keep it on the feet?" He could just state the obvious and say "Sherk should look to shoot for a takedown." and so on.

My main beef is he spreads misinformation.

Funny you should say that, because I actually miss Blatnick.At least he had some real wrestling credentials and knowledge.Wonder what happened to him?

I can imagine Goldberg getting a position as a commentator, but keeping that position, I don't know how/why.


However, it must be something that the UFC wants. Even when the owners were different (SEG), they had two main commentators. Jeff Blatnik and Jim Brown. If you look at these two guys you have an Olymipic wrestler and a guy with no knowledge of MMA (Brown). Now you have a guy that knows something about BJJ (Rogan) and a guy that apparently knows little about MMA(Goldberg).

Brown was obviously there as a familiar face. Honestly, I think Goldberg is there because he is a familiar face/voice too, (he did broadcast work for football and NHL) for the casual fan.


IMO, what they really need are three commentators. One to ask the n00b questions and one striking expert and one grappling expert.

Yeah but I have a feeling as the sport becomes more and more mainstream those stupid questions will end.
