Ok, well, this topic is basically made to see what you all eat for your meals everyday. I have been trying to stay good to my diet so far with working out. I was eating oats and wheat toast for breakfast, 6 inch chicken breast sub from subway for lunch, and normally salad at night with fruit and granolla bars inbetween every meal. But I have found myself straying farther away from my diet, like tonight I ate spaghetti at dinner, 2 slices of pizza and choclate milk at like 2 a.m. Had hot wings yesterday and chinese the day before. I was doing good for about two weeks untill I guess I became bored with the foods I was eating..

Just wanted you all to post some recipes for things you eat that would be good for me still that would spice things up, I just can't eat the same things over and over. xD Much appreciated.

Some snacks stuff you can have.

turkery on wheat, lowfat peanutbutter n J on wheat (add some wheat germ)..
colors over noncolor
brown over white rice
wheat over white
simple stuff like that..

Little protein recipe for ya..
Ingredients:
1 cup sugar-free peanut butter
4 scoops (or 1 and 1/3 cups) whey protein powder - most are low in carbs, but check - any flavor
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Artificial sweetener to taste, about 1-1½ cup (some protein powders have sweeteners as well)
Preparation:Put all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix all at once. A mixer works great for this, but a food processor would probably be fine as well, or just a spoon. Then roll into balls. If you like, roll in crushed nuts. I've mixed almond meal with powdered erythritol and that worked well as a coating.

Pasta really isnt that bad, its high in carbs but if your active then its good.
Believe it or not popcorn is a low calorie snack, you have to be smart and not get the "movies buttery kind" .
Get alot of fruit, bananas, apple,an a orange is great, put it all in a blender, add a little bit of water, and you have a natural high energy snack.
I wana say cottage cheese is good, but i think it has alot of calories. But high in protein. Tuna is great.
yogurt, almonds, fruit, granola bars, are all good snacks.

Anything else, just ask

I have a quick tip and will post some recipes later.

My quick tip is to use fresh ingredients. Stay away from canned ingredients (full of sugar and salt), store bought mixes and stocks, etc.

another thing you can substitute for granola is rice crispy treats. believe it or not but in 1 granola bar there is as much fat as 3 rice crispy treats. and home-made rice crispy treats are even better than the store bought because of the lack of preservatives.

heres the nutrient facts:

part of the problem is your oin ly eating 3 times a day.. keep eating the same types of food but eat about every 3 hours you will find your night cravings will diminish... ... make your goal 5-6 meals a day depending on how long you are awake for. . but your last meal should be at least 2 hours before bed..

I want to make a comment about the 5-6 meals a day thing.

I've done this and I think it can help you lose weight to an extent. It is also healthier because it is generally not good for your body (overall, but mainly for digestion) to stuff yourself.

However, I found one of the problems with the 5-6 meals a day is that I was always hungry. If I was in a position to eat more food at a given sitting (ie. if I went out for the weekend and ate at restaurants) I found that I was eating 5 big meals rather than small meals. My appetite would get out of control.

Another thing I found was because my meals were small, I found it difficult to get a balanced meal. i.e. it's not easy to get a carb, meat and fruit/veggie into one little meal and still have variety to keep your sanity.

So the 5-6 meals a day thing is great, but it can be easy (IMO) to slip to the dark side and you might end up eating more on some days.

I have more recipes, but I'll start with a simple pasta one to get you guys rolling

Pasta d'olio

Take some spicy sausage and remove the meat from the casings. Fry it up (break it up into bits in the pan) with a bit of olive oil. I usually use one sausage for two servings (I typically make 5-6 servings at a time)

Cut up at least two of your favorite veggies. I put lots of veggies in my pasta. My faves are brussel sprouts, spinach and celery, but I also have used asparagus. Feel free to use whatever you want, but I find that if you put more than two veggies (or fruits) in the pasta it kind of takes away the distinct flavours of each component.

Fry up the veggies with the meat, a bit more olive oil, lots of freshly minced garlic (I do my own in large quantities), basil, parsley, oregano and dried chili peppers. *note that some veggies like the brussel sprouts should be boiled prior to frying them. Otherwise they will not cook thoroughly.

Boil your favorite pasta to. I use either bow tie, fusilli or penne noodles because they mix better than long noodles. I only use whole wheat pasta.

Drain you noodles and mix them with the meat, veggies and spices. Make sure the noodles are coated with the oil and spices evenly.

Serve with some parm cheese if you want.

variations and notes.
**If you like seafood, replace the oil with mussel broth (made by boiling mussels in water until the water turns white). Add shrimp and mussel meat instead of sausage.
**I usually have about as much veggies and meat (together) as noodles so I don't just fill up on carbs.
**you don't need to add meat at all. Sometimes I just use the veggies. I found that chicken and beef didn't go well.
**olive oil is good for you and better than a sauce that is packed with salt and sugar. Canola oil can replace olive oil, but it doesn't work as well IMO.

I have more, stay tuned

Yes I know what you mean on this.. I used the food guides out of the Body for ife program and he gives tips for healthy cheating.. for instance.. fruits and veggies.. if your still hungry eat more of them... as for the carbs and protien.. use your hand size as a guide line.. neither should be bigger then your hand or fist in size.. though the veggies are good as long as they are cooked properly..

As a former dietician in the Navy and a chef I have lists of healthy recipies I can get for people soon as my home PC is back up and running... the last week or two I have been on at work...

I'm not much of a cook, but my go-to healthy meal is to take chicken, cut it into strips and cook it in very light olive oil along with green peppers and mushrooms (onions would work too, but I hate them) in a pan. Its quick, easy healthy and pretty damn good. Depending on how you do carbs, you can put it on a low carb wrap and make a tortilla out of it as well. If you want to avoid the oil all together, wrap it in tinfoil and grill it.

Im about to go to my 1st training session, and i was tryin to find somethin light to eat before I go. so I made a shake
A banana, half a can of pinapple and some pinapple juice, a small can of mandarin oranges and the juice, and some crushed up ice. Its pretty damn good

Eating before training is tricky at first. Too soon and you'll puke, too late and you'll feel the effects at the end of the session. You've gotta figure out what your body can handle and go from there. I can't eat less than 3 hours before a hard session or I know I'll be sick.
Rush
7/16/08 8:17:39PM
I always found that a banana and granola bar 1/2 hour before training was good enough to get me though 3 hours as long as I kept moving. I usually felt hunger if I lingered in class (like when the teacher was talking).

I would usually eat a bowl of yogurt when I got home. It was late and if I ate a full meal I would gain 5 lbs rather quickly.

a great snack ive always loved is the skyr yogurt with a little bit of granola in it.

in a cup of the yogurt theres 26 grams of carbs (natural sugar) and 16 g of protein.

http://www.skyr.is/products/blueberry/

i sprinkle some yogurt in, that was something i was always able to eat before training.

If i really wanted to carb load, i would get some grape nuts, add milk, and microwave it till it was nice and warm, and sweeten with some clover honey until it was just right.

some people habe problems with the dairy so close to working out, i never did. And grape nuts is such simple food it digested real easily for me.

Ok, well at the moment I work at pizza hut while going to school. It's hard for me take food to work everyday. Would there be anything there other than a salad that could be healthy? Or should I try to stop by subway or just bring my food.
Svartorm
7/22/08 2:52:59AM
I used to work at Pizza Hut, so check this: Take your sauce pans (for cooking marinara and whatnot), spray some food release in, use the primavera veggi medley, plus whatever you want off the make table as far as fresher veggies go. If you want the diced chicken, thats actually fairly healthy, but thats the only protein in that joint thats not terrible for you, use the metal cover and put it in about half way. Its basically the chicken primavera pasta bake, minus all the alfrado and that kind of stuff.

Don't touch the pan pizza, breadsticks, or basically anything else there if you're trying to eat healthy.

A less healthy option thats better for you than most of the crap there:

Prepare a medium thin crust and instead of sauce, use mustard (sounds weird, but trust me), then put a light amount of beef mix (C spec if they still use those portion charts for pizzas), whatever veggies you want, light cheese and run that through the over. Top with diced lettuce and pickle and its a lower fat cheese burger pizza. Not that healthy, but better for you than the pan doughs or normal thin crust pizzas.

tunafish on wheat.
either add hot sauce, or some spices like garlic powder, old bay, and cajun.

chicken on wheat.
add hot sauce.

add hot sauce to everything to make it taste better

If only, pizza hut doesn't have veggie medley on the table no more, new pastas and all that jazz, out with all the old stuff. Alot of the sauces are gone to so that choice won't work. I also can't bring mustard in since it's a "foreign food product" says my manager. So I guess I'll have to stick to salad and subway at work. :[
Svartorm
7/23/08 2:43:54AM
Tell the manager you have a dietary restriction and have to have it. Trust me, they're too lazy to follow up on it. See my beard? I had that at Pizza Hut for years, even though you're not supposed to have facial hair, because I told them I have a skin condition that doesn't allow me to shave.

Would love some more info on this subject if anyone found anything fun.

I'm a cook actually, and I can never find anything healthy to taste very well. Tastebuds like carbs and calories, especially calories from fats.

Healthies recipe I can think of would be:
(Eggs fried with vegies)
- put some nonstick spray on the pan. I prefer butter, but you know thats fat.
- fry up some onions and some tomatoes (separately) and take them off the pan.
- fry up couple of eggs on very light fire, can even take out the yellow part (yolk) to make it healthier... although i love to eat it actually.
- toast a slice of wheat bread and you have a meal with a glass of fresh squeezed juice. :)

i'll post more later.

I'm not to wonderful of a cook, I tried come recipes, didn't turn out to well. xD I'll try to stick with the basics and just ask, how does everyone cook there chicken breast? What sauces and that jazz?

Also..I'll just post it here...would this meal plan be good and healthy? I'm trying to cut my little bit of extra fat I got going.

Meal 1 - (breakfast) Bowl of Special k
Meal 2 - (pre-workout) protein shake
Meal 3 - (post-workout) protein shake again
Meal 4 - Can of Tuna
Meal 5 - Chicken breast and veggies
Meal 6 - (before bed) Cottage Cheese and 10 almonds
Svartorm
7/31/08 3:20:43AM
Just so you know, its unsafe to do the can of tuna every day. The mercury levels in tuna will actually make you sick and you're only supposed to eat something like 6 servings of tuna in a month now. I think a can is one or maybe two servings, so you'd have to find something to substitute on certain days. Maybe a salad with lean turkey on it and oil or fat free dressing.

Also, don't be afraid to actually eat, even with a diet. Things like raw veggies are fat free and your body can easily burn off the calories from something like carrot sticks, or another snacks. Some fruit on the Special K would be a nice touch too to get some natural sugars in your system, and you can switch it up and get some variety. A problem with diets like that is that they get terribly boring in no time fast, so having something you can substitute to make it more interesting helps, like different veggies with the chicken every day, different fruit with the cereal, different dressing or meat with the salad, etc.
