Even in the usually fascinating world of mixed martial arts, Rudy Valentino stands out as one of its most interesting figures. In addition to his head coach duties for former UFC welterweight champion BJ Penn, Rudy is a former kickboxing champion and professional surfer, a fight historian and he also works full time for the Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation.

“If it is a striking match Jens had better stay far away from him and if it goes to the ground BJ will get him there too. BJ is in the best shape of his life and has had no injuries coming in to this fight unlike a couple of past fights where his right hand was hurt. Everything is healthy and he is mentally and physically in shape. He quit partying and he quit drinking seven months ago. That’s what we are looking at right now. The fight might end fast or it might take three rounds. He’ll be ready for either one”

OH SHIT OH SHIT

BJ is in the best shape of his life

Has anyone, going into a fight, ever said "you know, I'm in decent shape," or "I'm in medicore shape this time?"

Point being, EVERYONE feels they are in the best shape of their life heading into a fight. Even if they don't, they'll probably state on the record that they are, just for the mental edge.

If it's true, great. We should see a great fight. But no one should be surprised if BJ gasses at this point.

I won't be surprised... I'm actually counting on it.

Really Jens is in trouble standing? I doubt that, Jens has some of the best hands at 155. That's how he beat Penn the first time, by outboxing him and winning a decision. Penn has ok standup, but not on the same level as Jens. I have Penn winning, but certainly not by KO.

Hands aren't enough. Gomi KOed Pulver by softening him up with knees first. Jens' striking is good, but he's been knocked out by guys BJ has submitted.

Most exciting part of the article is when Valentino announces that BJ hasn't partied for 7 months. If that is true, don't count on BJ gassing.
