The Luta Libre(spelling?) guys from Brazil at one time a premier fighting style with great matches against the BJJ guys some really incredable fights. Any one who has been around this sport for a while knows what i am talking about and for the tuf noobs you might get some info off this thread.

I think it's Luta Livre.

I think we don't see it around any more (or little) because it's definition is broad, literally meaning "free fighting" and has thus been replaced by MMA. It may also be possible that the UFC normalizes Brazilian fighters from Vale Tudo or Luta Livre with the term "freestyle"

Also, I think this should go in the lounge.

It was a style in competitioon against BJJ for a long time in Brazil. Most notably against the Gracies.
.Their are a few popular MMA fighters that once fought under the style of Luta Livre, including Marco Ruas and Hugo Duarte.Royler Gracie fought against a Luta Livre fighter named Eugenio Taedu in a bout that lasted 45 minutes and was declared a draw.

I think it just eventualy died out as a name and was just replaced with terms such as Vale Tudo and free fighting etc.

hey guys thanks for the sporadic info I understand what ya meant and I remember some great fights with Rickson(by arm bar){sorry but I am usually on the underground} and Rolls Gracie (who I think could have been the best Gracie to ever fight but he died so young) and with the pride fights is why I brought it up I was watching them the other day (I have most of them) I know the break arm fight but really I miss the old school true styles and have always wondered why the style has never been a force in modern MMA being they were like catch or if you prefer catch as catch can incorporating what works as catch can incorporating what works

The reason that Luta Livre is gone is most fighters train in BJJ now.

Yeah but it's only a picture.

I remember when the Pride fc website was selling them. They also had that cool Crocop action figure of him throwing a head kick.Better start collecting stuff like that now, because fighting memorbilla will be worth a lot!

In case your interested; go to Liddells website and pic up one of his Christmas orniments.I guarentee you in 20 years that thing will be worth gold.

The last guy I can remember coming from that style on the bigger stage was Pedro Rizzo who had Marco Ruas as his instructor.

I saw the Luta Livra guys as basically anyone who didn't train in the formal BJJ schools...there really wasn't that much in common in the fighting styles of guys like Duarte and Ruas for example. Nowadays I think people understand the value of formal training and rather than having "anything goes" training they'll train Muay Thai like the Chute Box guys, wrestling like Babalu or, of course, BJJ. Luta Livre was marketed effectively early on as a "real streetfighting system", but nowadays it would have connotations of "I don't really know how to fight, but I'm going to try anyways" so I think fighters would stay away from that tag.
