Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.

Damn, what a shame. He was one of the best comedians I've heard, always enjoyed watching/listening to him.

A great comedian and a great actor too. We should take his eternal advice from the Bill & Ted films: "Be Excellent To Each Other".

That really sucks, he's my all-time favorite comedian.

Not surprising though, he's had 4 heart attacks already. I'm surprised he lasted this long! Tough bastard.

This so sucks ass. He was the man. So many have tried to be like him and fail. The closes is Lewis Black. What put him on the map, "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television", recorded on Class Clown. Carlin was arrested on July 21, 1972 at Milwaukee's Summerfest and charged with violating obscenity laws after performing this routine. The case, which prompted Carlin to refer to the words for a time as, "The Milwaukee Seven", was dismissed in December of that year; the judge declared the language indecent, stating that the language was indecent but cited free speech, as well as the lack of any disturbance. In 1973, a man complained to the FCC that his son had heard a later, similar routine, "Filthy Words", from Occupation: Foole, broadcast one afternoon over WBAI, a Pacifica Foundation FM radio station in New York City. Pacifica received a citation from the FCC, which sought to fine Pacifica for allegedly violating FCC regulations which prohibited broadcasting "obscene" material. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the FCC action, by a vote of 5 to 4, ruling that the routine was "indecent but not obscene", and the FCC had authority to prohibit such broadcasts during hours when children were likely to be among the audience.

The Mrs. and I saw him in Baltimore a few years back at the Lyric Opera House. I got to see a legend do what he did best and for that I am grateful

George Carlin is the man, that's all there is to it:

"I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me . . they're cramming for their final exam. "

"When cheese gets its picture taken, what does it say?"

"You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. ... Two reasons: first of all, I think he's a good actor, OK? To me that counts. Second, he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't (expletive) around."

"I'm getting really sick of guys named Todd. ... Where are all these goofy (expletive) boys' names coming from? Taylor, Tyler, Jordan, Flynn - these are not real names. You wanna hear a real name? Eddie."

I love that last one, just his delivery of it is classic. R.I.P. George

First Lenny Bruce, then Bill Hicks, and now Georgie... **** ever watching stand-up comedy ever again. Things are rotten enough in the world and then you lose people like this, it's too sad.
