After the debacle that resulted in the UFC 151 cancellation in September, the focus has seemingly been not on fighters that are stepping up to keep fights together, but the ones that are turning down fights, for whatever reason.

Cut him then Dana. Were past the point of thinking muscle bound fighters are legit top fighters anyways and Kongo has been in some TERRIBLE fights as of late. That being said, Barry vs Kongo was one of the most fun fights I've ever seen, why not rematch them?

Maybe Dana should treat everyone as equals instead of giving special treatment to certain guys in an effort to save his reality show.

any idea what the other fight he was referring to? Could it have been on the all HW card?

Yeah you're either fighters or you're trying to earn a living employed by a company that cuts guys who step up then lose and reduces your pay by half if you lose. What a super duper way to motivate people!

Well done Dana, way to look like a dick.

Just cause he says no to fighting Nelson on 4 weeks notice when he's currently on holiday. In the last 6 fights he's 4-1-1 with 2 finishes and a Knockout of the night and Comeback of the year. If the UFC was all about being exciting Danny Downes would still have a contract. It's clearly not, Kongo is in a position where he can wait for a fighter he wants to fight he's 37, he gets paid $140,000 ($70,000 win bonus) his UFC record is 10-6-1.

I think Kongo's been smart, pick up his 140,000 for easy wins without being in fights that get him too badly banged up, it might not be entertaining and dana might cry over it but it sure as hell beats the way bob sapp's making his money

I haven't got to read the article yet. This is just my first impression.
The headline alone sounds vicious. Kongo is obviously a fighter. I don't think their's any mistake about that.

I'm pondering here, that perhaps the days of the UFC" company man " is over.
It seems as if so much is at stake now,the sport is bigger, the chances to make it or break it seem slimmer, the fighters are more business savy, in the sense their watching their own asses and images more than going out and stepping up at the risk of looking like a fool in the end. ( I wonder how many UFC fighters contemplate coming out to the octagon with Metallica's Disposable Heroes bleeding out of the speakers?)
Of course their are some left. Franklin considers himself this kind of fighter but perhaps fighters who feel less financially secure or are afraid of losing something will no longer take these risk as much?
Perhaps Jones not taking on Chael at the last minute says as much about the state of the sport now as it does the individual star?

You could really go down the rabbit hole here I think, and it's certainly a slippery slope. All it would take is one well established name to make claims that the huge surge these past few years in the increased ped usages are just as much to blame on the companies way of dealing with business,as much as it is the individual in question to really stir debate. Time could show that Zuffa is certainly modeling themselves in the image of the WWE in more ways than marketing.

Just some food for thought.

I was thinking something similar.
These guys are in a really tough position considering the different expectations put on them.

These guys are expected to be F*CKING FIGHTERS who lay it all on the line for honor and macho-cred, but they are also supposed to be businessmen and independent contractors with families to support.

These two characterizations are often at odds with one another. It's fascinating.

Haven't the last two fights Kongo has been offered been short notice fights?! Dana needs to hush up on this area considering he's cutting guys after short notice fight losses.

I remember Dana blasting BJ for not training hard enough because BJ has the same "you're either a fighter or not" philosophy and Dana wanted him to train harder for fights.....signed many weeks in advance, now he's going to blast guys for wanting to train for fights? you cant throw short notice fight offers at guys then get mad when they want to train for it, then come out and say "you're a fighter or not" you hypocrite

I am not a dnaa White fan but I think like him in a alot of his opinions but not this one...Hes a bully..

I remember I think when Ben Sanders agreed to step in I think against Dan Hardy on really short notice and he lost and was cut and Ben Sanders has never been in a boring fight that I can remember...

I would not doubt one day someone is gonna embarrass Dana White in public and make him pee his pants for his bully attitude...

It's Saunders, and it was Fitch who he fought on short notice, he wasn't released until after his next fight, a loss vs. Hallman.

I know by "Gals" you mean Ronda and grapoler said it best when he said "The Flyweights had a tourney because it was a new division. This is just transferring a division from Strikeforce to the UFC. The same thing happened when Aldo came from the WEC to the UFC. I don't understand the complaints. This is exactly how it was supposed to happen."

Get over it already

Yep, Fitch was supposed to fight Alves, but 2 or 3 days before the event Alves, had ct scan that showed something in his brain not right. So Saunders stepped up to fight him.

Kongo is a good fighter.

I will say that things have changed for the worse as far as fighters being treated fairly in the UFC. I'm pinning this on the accumulation of bad seasons for TUF . Danas personality seems to have changed into that of a power hungry dictator who throws his weight around when something doesnt go his way.

Oh well we will ser what happens

If it is so easy to fight on 4 days notice why doesn't dana just step in fight? I think we can all agree that would be a big draw.
Guy criticizes fighters for nor stepping up, not being exciting and not being in shape, enough is enough already if you want to treat mma like a legit mainstream sport then you should respect fighters as legit mainstream athletes.

I was just basically saying that people used to do a lot of shit that was thought to be just fine at the time... then they realize... it's kinda stupid... and it stops happening.
