For a brief moment during Saturday's "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" main event in Anaheim, Calif., Fedor Emelianenko (29-1) looked almost human.

Apparently frustrated by the effective striking, long reach and rapid speed of challenger Andrei Arlovski (14-6), Emelianenko looked wounded in the corner, and "The Pitbull" smelled blood.

Then suddenly, and with little warning, a crushing right hand flattened Arlovski and immediately returned Emelianenko's mystique. During the post-event press conference, the Russian champion said that despite appearances, he was firmly in control throughout the 194 seconds he needed to destroy the world's second-best heavyweight.

listen.

He was calm in the corner, and had been trying that way over the top shot a few times.

He knew he would catch him coming in, he knew it clearly. (I THINK)

Arlovski was doing well, but it was nothing new for Fedor.

What ever there was no way the fight was even if you ask me Arlovski was doing everything right to whoop Fedors a!!. Fedor didn't look calm he wasn't in control and wasn't landing anything, he even got rocked once or even twice. Arlovski did just what Uriah Faber did made a bad mistake when he was not just wining but dominating the fight. Fedor couldn't take him down he couldn't hit him and was on his way to being KOed so yes he was dominating the fight.

Arlovski was winning the fight, but on his way to KOing Fedor? I doubt that.

Had Arlovski not gone for that knee and kept Fedor back in the corner, I am confident he would have KOed Fedor. Fedor had no answers for Arlovski's speed and reach.

I agree and his defence was a well timed Chris Leben haymaker. JK

Of course it was new for Fedor, Fedor has never been tested like that, not even by CroCop.

I think Fedor was losing...and if Andrei didn't get careless and impatient he would have knocked Fedor out cold.
If you didn't see Fedor dazed, bewildered and in trouble.....you need to take the idiot shades off.
Arlovski clearly controlled the fight and was well on his way to a mega upset.
Fedor is beatable for sure.

Hm. His reaction was outstanding. That wasn't a haymaker, he stepped into the punch and turned it over and he did it really really fast.

I had AA to win the fight and I was excited about the way he was fighitng but I never saw Fedor in serious trouble. I lost money on this one but 26 straight wins is no fluke. He's fought everyone there is to fight except Cotoure and some of the new guys. Until someone actually BEATS him and doesn't just look decent against him===until they get KTFO maybe we should treat his performances with a little respect. It's kind of like criticizing Tyson for taking 2 rounds to KO someone.

If you make a mistake with Fedor he will sub you or KO you. That makes it really really hard to fight him. Could AA have KO'd him? Maybe but you have to take risks to KO someone and you just can't seem to take too many risks with Fedor. Maybe someone could fight him with a plan that uses distance, striking, and countering his looping shots, and stuffing clinches and takedowns, to take him to decision win.
but it's not like he hasn't fought top tier strikers, BJJ guys, wrestlers, and kickboxers. He's fought them all....and the bodies hit the floor.

Respect Game.

Even fight my arse. I wouldnt say Andrei was dominating, but if the round had of got to the end, it would of been scored in favour of Andrei.

I watched the post-presser and he actually said he didn't feel like he was in danger. But he didn't have AA in danger either. That's probably why it was taken as the fight was "even"

I don't think he was at all talking about points for the judges.

I'll be interested to see where Arlovski chooses to go from here... I would love to see a rematch. I almost feel there was an opportunity to dethrone the King last night, and AA just couldn't make it happen. I was very surprised by what I saw last night. The way AA controlled the stand up, and even pushed Fedor to clinch with him through precise striking, The fact that Fedor couldn't get AA down said a lot about how this fight would go if it was taken into deeper waters. I just feel like if they met again it just wouldn't have the same wow factor to it. We now know that AA's striking is enough to back up Fedor from his relentless and impassive assault on the HW division, its just a shame that AA got caught. I picked Fedor but about a minute in I was worried for him a bit, really though that was short lived as my wonder increased... that someone would finally be able to stop that Russian Murder Machine. Props to Fedor for the win.

Arlovski was winning that round until he got knocked out it wasnt even. Im not too sure what fight everyone was watching but Arlovski looked pretty good until he got rocked. Fedor always finds a way to win no matter what, dude is always so calm in the ring. Arlovski looked good but I knew it was only going to last for so long!

Fujita had Fedor way worse off than Arlovski did. To me it looked like Fedor was getting the feel for Arlovski's speed. He looked flustered, that's why he clinched with him for a minute or so. I think he was calm in the corner, he got straight kicked, knocked back up against the ropes. And Arlovski made a very cocky mistake, going for a flying knee and ate canvas for it. Well I guess he landed on his forehead, not his mouth.

Fedor is with no question the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world.

Barely any of Arlovskis shots landed flush and Fedor was never in trouble. QQ

Arlovski was winning the round, but all this "Arlovski was dominating until he got KTFO" is not really getting the point of that match, or recognizing the pattern of what any rematch between the two would look like.

The only way Arlovski was going to win that fight is if he:

a) avoided every single punch Fedor threw for the rest of the 5 rounds. I don't think anyone thought that Fedor would be able to get the better of the exchanges on the feet overall, but AA's chin has always been suspect and it was just a matter of time before Fedor landed something. The first time he did land something the fight was over with AA face down.

b) In addition to avoiding getting caught on the feet. Andrei would have had to continue to avoid every takedown for the rest of the fight. Andrei's defense off his back is not bad, but you have to be drinking some pretty strong AA kool-aid to think that he could survive for long underneath Fedor.

AA made one mistake. Fedor thew one punch. Over.

That's all it takes apparently. How many fighters do you see picking off a guy in the middle of a flying knee? I've never seen it.

Crazy attempted flying knee by Andrei - really dunno what went through his head that made him do that - but then, I doubt he did either once that punch connected.

I'm sure he now knows what he should have done, and that's why Arlovski looked so disgusted with himself after the fight.

He was winning the round clearly however, there's no way it was even.

i think if you look at the replay you can see that fedor rope-a-dope'd arlovski. he pretended to be hurt (i dont think that kick would've hurt fedor as much as he made at seem) and when arlovski dropped his hands for the flying knee, BAM. Roach said that arlovski will catch fedor with a knee if fedor goes for a takedown, and it seems that arlovski was playing to roach's gameplan against him. too bad his chin is made out of Styrofoam.

look how perfect the timing is

He put his head down said a small prayer and hoped for the best out of luck it landed and now everyone wants to say he planed it, It was his game plan to get punched the whole round and then land just one shot Once again

I think that AA was winning the round up until he ran head first into Fedor's fist. AA just seemed to get a little too overzealous and overestimated how badly he had hurt Fedor.

LOL have you ever seen Fedor throw a punch? That looping right hand is classic Fedor, that's how he throws basically every lead right hand he ever throws. How the hell can people say it's luck when one fighter leads with his head and his hands by his waist and an undefeated champion instantly capitalizes and knocks him the **** out.

Can anyone explain to me what is lucky about throwing a punch that is intended to knock your opponent out and succeding? To me that sounds like the definition of skill.

I think people are getting a little over-excited because arlovski out pointed him for about a minute and a half. He landed a few nice shots, pushed Fedor back, then they tied up in the corner for a while where it was a stalemate for about a minute, then the exact same thing happened again and Arlovski made a mistake. Lights out.

This is an indication of how amazing the guy is. Someone starts to win against him for a fraction of a round and people are all over him about getting lucky and getting "dominated". He was getting outpointed, by no means was he getting dominated or did he look to be in real danger of getting KOed. You make one mistake and it's night night against this guy. It's kind of insane to chalk up a win by an undefeated champion with 30 wins almost all ending in the first round as "lucky".

Who was sucking on the mat 3 minutes into the fight? To the best of my knowledge it wasn't Fedor.

Hating is fun but with Fedor it's idiotic. Why not enjoy the greatest fighter of this era. The Muhammed Ali of MMA...And beyond the crazy skills he is the epitome of how all athletes should act.

I second that.
Luck is one two kids through random hay makers in a school parking lot.
Fedor aimed at AA's head and hit him. That's skill, not luck.

i have two issues with alot of the comments so far

first - fedor got lucky. the first time i watched the fight and i agreed with this but after watching the entire fight a couple times it seems to me that fedor saw arlovskis hands hangin low and he unleashed a perfect power shot

the only thing lucky about that punch was the fact that arlovski jumped into that punch at the absolute wrong time

second- everyone over exaggerating AA's chin i dont think any hw could stand one of fedors power punch, espicially when jumping full force into the punch

it was a good fight and i only wish it would of lasted longer it was nice to see both of them clinching and trying to take each other down and kind of cancelling each other out AA standup looks great and fedor did what fedor does, always win

To me there are only 5 heavyweights left that have a chance at beating him that he hasnt fought yet. (when i say chance with some of these fighters it might be a very very small chance)

Barnett
Mir
Overeem
Couture
Lesner (i hate to say but he does have a chance at beating fedor)
