I would have to say my favorite ma movies are Samurai movies. Samurai Fiction is probably my number one pick. Others would include the old period pieces like Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, and Samurai Rebellion.
!

I wouldn't classify Seven Samurai as a martial arts movie. I would say it's a drama.

I can see where you might think that, but the same can be said about any martial arts movie. Any MA movie you name can be classed as either Drama, Action, or comedy. I would class Seven Samurai as the Grand daddy of martial arts epic's.

I disagree. I classify a martial arts movie as a film that would be nothing without the martial arts.

Seven Samurai's story is heavily dependant on the acting, not the battles. It has been a year or two since I've seen the film, but I don't remember the battle scenes being all that elaborate.

Other movies I wouldn't really classify as martial arts movies:

The Karate Kid (drama, but it's a tough call because the movie is actually more about karate than actually showing karate)
Rocky films (drama - in fact I consider pretty much every boxing movie a drama)
Most Chuck Norris films (I put them under the general action genre)
Segal's later films ( a lot of these are more action flicks because they have only a couple seconds of martial arts)

I really respected Li's comments in Cradle 2 the Grave as well... when he humbly stated that he knew those guys could kick his a**.
