Something I've seen on other forums are fake "fantasy drafts." That is, you get 10-12 people, and then take turns assembling a "team" of athletes, celebrities, actors, or whatever. In a movie forum, you'd "draft" actors, actresses, and directors. Here, we would draft a team of MMA fighters, assembling a team kind of like the IFL.
EDIT: Instead of a fight team, you'll be drafting fighters to make up a pay-per-view card.
So, the rules, if you think you might be interested:
1. Each player drafts 10 fighters total.
2. Each player drafts their fighters in any order they want to.
3. Each player must have 2 fighters to compete in each weight class: Heavyweight (265 lbs), Light-Heavyweight (205 lbs), Middleweight (185 lbs), Welterweight (170 lbs), Lightweight (155 lbs).
3a. The two fighters that you select in each weight class will square off against each other on your fight card.
4. Fighters qualify for the weight classes at which they've fought. Common knowledge will be sufficient, in most cases. Everybody knows Rich Franklin has fought at 205, for instance, and even though Brandon Vera hasn't fought at 205, we all know he could if he wanted to. Sherdog's listings will be a standard source for fighting weight, but if you can find documentation of a fighter fighting at another weight, go right ahead.
4a. Fighters also qualify at one step above their normal weight class, even if they haven't done it before. However, the fighter's effectiveness will be less than usual. Most guys fight at the lowest weight they can make without killing themselves. If a guy has actually fought at two weight classes, we already know how well he performed, we can look it up. But if we have to speculate, we have to assume that they wouldn't be as good as they are at their regular weight class.
5. Each fighter can only be drafted by one person.
5a. We're not bidding or anything, just drafting.
6. The draft order will be randomized by me, and it will be a "snaking" format (e.g. the last person to pick in the 1st round gets to pick first in the 2nd round; then they pick last again in the 3rd round, and first again in the 4th round; back and forth, and back and forth).
7. Each person has 24 hours to make a selection, starting from the time-stamp of the selection made ahead of you. If you miss a selection, you can make it up once the draft is completed (you'll get all your next picks at your regular spot).
7a. I'm not going to be a cop or a baby-sitter. If the person ahead of you misses their 24-hour window, go ahead and make your pick. If you miss your 24-hour window, please don't get pissy about it. This is just a game. Once the 10 rounds are finished, we'll have "makeup rounds" for anyone who needs them.
Um... I guess that's it.
I thought about having each team draft woman fighters, but if we get more than 5 or 6 people who want to play, I won't know who to draft. I don't think I can name more than a half-dozen women fighters, and if I have to go do homework, this won't be fun anymore. So, the heck with it. Just guys.

One question: Is the outcome based on real fight results?

I'll give it a go....
The coach is also a fighter?
Or an established fight camp?
Can I have Anderson Silva?

Say, I had another idea. Instead of this being a fight team, how about if we're drafting fighters to create a fight
card? So the two guys you name in each weight class will be fighting each other. Then at the end, we (and whomever else) vote on which is the best card (e.g. which one we'd watch ourselves, if we could).
Then at least we'd have a "winner."
It would also create a little different strategy, because you'd want two guys in each weight class who would be a good matchup for each other.

The latter. Pat Miletich, Juanito Ibarra, Greg Jackson, Renzo Gracie. Those guys. Of course, some trainers still compete once in a while. If, like the women fighters, we can't come up with enough of them, then we can forget the trainers. Also, if you guys like the fight
card idea better than the fight
camp idea, the trainers wouldn't be needed.

OK, so I'm really interested now. I think the fight card idea is really good. That would be a great idea. I'm in.

Sold!

The rules will be the same as above, with two changes:
1. No trainers, just ten fighters.
2. The two fighters you select in each weight class are meant to compete against each other, not against somebody else's two fighters.
I'll wait until Sunday to see who's interested in participating, then post the draft order. Plan on starting the draft on Monday morning.
After the draft is over, the fight cards will be assembled, with 1 Main Event, 3 Main Card Fights, and 1 Swing Bout. Then we'll vote on which card would be the most fun to watch. If we're not totally sick of this by then, we could also vote on which fighter would win the matchups on the card that wins the vote.

One question: Is the outcome based on real fight results?
Good question. The answer is no. The outcome will be based on how we vote on the cards, and on the matches.
Naturally, if the two fighters selected have met in battle in real life, the voting could be influenced by that actual outcome. I wouldn't want Anderson Silva-Rich Franklin III on my card, for instance. Furthermore, if the fighters you select are already scheduled to fight each other in real life, you might lose votes for being unimaginative.

I'll probably pick names out of a coffee cup. A heavy, dark green coffee cup, with a big handle. It's very menacing.

So that means we'll be drafting 120 fighters in total, 24 in each weight class. Is that enough? We could add more fights to our cards, if we want to make it a little tougher. Or we could leave it at 5 and see how it goes (we can always do this again later, if people dig it, and add new rules and such).
I'll post the draft order this evening. The clock will officially start running at 8am Eastern USA time (so 5am Pacific, 1pm UTC), Monday morning. I'll start a new thread for the actual draft action, and this one can sink away.
