DREAM held a presser yesterday (Thursday) in Japan, some notes coming out of it:
DREAM 13 is Monday, March 22. DREAM Featherweight Champion Bibiano Fernandes vs. Joachim Hansen for the title is the main event. The event is scheduled to air in the US on HDNet.
Scheduled DREAM 13 participation: DEEP Lightweight Champion Katsunori Kikuno, Hideo Tokoro, Minowaman, DREAM Welterweight Champion Marius Zaromskis, Eddie Alvarez, Andrews Nakahara.
DREAM probably will go to South Korea for their April event. Sasahara explained that, depending on the performance of the inaugural event in Korea, DREAM may return later in the year, possibly in October. Also, there has been talks about holding events in Taiwan and Macau as part of DREAM's nascent effort to expand its brand overseas.
A light heavyweight tournament featuring Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi is expected to kick off in May with eight or sixteen participants. A middleweight tourney is also on tap to fill the throne vacated by Mousasi (an earlier determination match between Jason Miller & Ronaldo Souza went to a no contest, planned rematch never happened). On the other hand, a heavyweight title will be crowned in a title bout between two opponents handpicked by DREAM: Sasahara hinted strongly that Alistair Overeem will be one of the contenders.
Sasahara spoke about the plan to foster collaboration with other organizations. Though no specific detail was divulged, a plan to pit DREAM fighters against fighters from other organizations is in the works: Sasahara mentioned Strikeforce mainstays, Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson, and Robbie Lawler as some of the fighters he would like to court for appearance in DREAM.
DREAM Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri for the title will not happen until May or July. It was scheduled for NYE but postponed due to their other participation on the card and now due to a Kawajiri injury from 12/31.
