It's kind of hard to explain... but I'lll give it my best shot.

Simply put, there is a longstanding obsession with large people in Japanese culture. Look at the japanese national sport. Sumo Wrestling is all about freakishly large humans. Crossing over to MMA, is it any wonder that the nation's imagination is captured by the likes of Hong Man Choi, Bob Sapp, Zuluzinho, Giant Silva, and the like?

Now add in the fact, and I am stereotyping here, that japanese are a smallish race of people. During WW2, americans were demonized as these huge, brutal giants. In fact, japanese culture today celebrates the small. Small phones, small living spaces, smaller is better. If you've ever traveled to Japan, you know what I am talking about.

So, when they put together a fight with Minowa vs. a Giant. What they are playing on is the Japanese wanting to see someone like them beat someone who represents the giant world around them. Minowa is a national hero in Japan mostly because he is able to beat the giants, thereby symbolizing Japan's ability to compete with larger peoples.

So to simplify, a Minowa vs. Giants soothes the nation's short man complex.

EDIT: Also, this match takes on special significance to the japanese because Minowa's opponent is Korean. Japan and Korea have a longstanding rivalry that goes back centuries.

DREAM Press Conference

The stare down between Andre Dida and Eddie Alvarez was epic. Dida looked like he wanted to kill Alvarez right then and there.
