Alistair Overeem looked great last night, in his... er... demolition of Paul Buentello. Nothing against Buentello, mind you, but he's never been a "1A" fighter. Overeem has been up-and-down, mostly down, in his last several fights.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether he'll face elite competition, but With BodogFight sponsoring Strikeforce events, I wouldn't be surprised to see guys like Roman Zhentsov, Kristoff Midoux, or Josh Curran.

Regardless, I think Strikeforce may have a quality Heavyweight Champion.

I agree, he looked amazing.. he did anything and everything to Paul, The head hunter definately needs to work on his ground game... or sprawl for that matter...

Good win for The Demolition Man.. too athletic and technically sound for Buentello to handle.

Overeem deserved it. He's been through a lot of ups and downs as you have said and I hope this is where he turns his career around. Maybe with a couple of quality wins, we could see him in the UFC to take on a few of their HW's. Imagine Overeem vs Sylvia.

i was really happy to see him get some gold as he is my number 2 fav fighter, he looked in top physical shape, and he even said he can get bigger, he is well balanced so he can beat the striker and he has great standup including thoses lethal knees....i think he will break top ten at HW some day, but I think top 5 might be out of reach...

Yeah man he looked great, he should stay at heavyweight n=becuase he doesn't gas as fast there than when he is fighting light heavyweights, I would really like to see him come out with The Hammer and his old hair.

I agree that Overeem looked absolutely great last night. However, I'm not going assume that Alistair is going to keep it up for the long haul. This has kinda been Alistair's MO hasn't it? He shows up against a fighter and just looks awesome, keeps his career alive and gets fans hopes up, and then.... well I guess we will have to see this time but... a spectacular KO has usually followed, and usually by his next opponent.

Yeah, some people say you aren't really the champion until you've defended the belt once. We'll have to wait and see whether Overeem really "has it" or if this was a one-off performance...

Im a little late to the thread, but Overeem looked better than he has in a few years... Great to see him back...

And, yes Scott. He needs that hammer.

Yeah, I was disappointed not to see it. Maybe CSAC delayed their decision on whether or not he could bring it.

Alistair looked amazing last night, he took out a great heavyweight in Buentello with ease. Although I do have to disagree with basically everyone on the subject of him gassing at 205. Yes it's true he's probably waaaaay too big for 205, and that causes just as many problems as it does advantages, but his gas tank has never been a major issue, it's more in the fact that he folds under pressure... and this is meant with no disrespect to Overeem, but when he gets overwhelmed he just shuts down... But yes, moving to heavyweight will give him the advantage of a possibly improved gas tank, and he will most likely still be bigger than anyone he faces...

Glad to see Overeem really doing it, I've always loved his Muay Thai style. I was just watching his K-1 fight against Feitosa there, and he looked awesome until Feitosa caught him with a big hook, then his engine seemed to blow out. Amazing clinch when he chooses to use it, and his low kicks in particular look amazing. He is one of those fighters that looks great, his technique and form is awesome!

And for the record, I think Overeem was well on his way to beating Chuck when he got KO'd, that shot was Chuck's last chance, and he is damn lucky it hit. If he had missed, Overeem would have KO'd him and we'd never have got to see Rampage demolish Chuck!

EDIT: Gotta note, Alistair has an amazing physique, it's one of the best HW Muay Thai builds I've seen!

yeah it would be great to see him make a good run. hopefully he will not have the problems he has had in the past after an impressive performance. there is no doubt that he has the tools though, great stand up and clinch work, and far from helpless on the ground as well. when he puts it all together he can knock you out or submit you (he has to have one of the best guillotines in the biz)

I think he did gas more as a LHW... Take a look at the fight with Lil Nog, for instance, he didn't really start getting knocked around until after it seemed he tired...

Either way, he did look really good at HW... Great gameplan to TD Paul, tire him out, and then finish him... Alistair looked really big too... I've always wanted to see him win, and it was a good start for him... Hope to see more smashing from the demolition man... And the hammer too

I was hoping for the sake of the guys on my camp, who picked Buentello that Paul would win, but when Alistair was going after Paul, I couldn't help but cheer. I went into the fight thinking it'd be Alistair for a minute or two, then Paul would dominate to a decision. I am so happy for him. At first I didn't think Strikeforce was going to get a credible HW Champion, but after the other night, they have someone who will put them further on the map than before.

Ima big Buentello fan... And I found myself cheering for Alistair by the end of the fight too... He looks comfortable at HW, and if he packs on more muscle he could really be a force, as long as cardio issues don't get in the way...

Anyone know what he weighed in at during the fight?

I hope to see him fight a good kickboxer for his first defense... I wanna see some more of that mean standup he's got

Apparently Overeem has received a 180 day medical suspension, for a broken finger. It says "the suspension could end early with a doctor’s clearance", but he's probably on the shelf for at least a few months.

thats bad news, im sure they wanted to showcase him as much as possible, but oh well, this gives them time to hype a contender for him.
