In the wake of Vitor Belfort's shoulder injury, UFC President Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva were left with a decision regarding the status of middleweight champion Anderson Silva. They could pull him off the UFC 112 card, move him up to fight a non-title light-heavyweight bout or find another contender to replace Belfort.

White and Silva chose option three.

During Thursday's UFC press conference, White detailed the thought-process behind choosing Demian Maia to oppose the champ.

The decision essentially came down to a few names: Chael Sonnen, Maia, Michael Bisping or Wanderlei Silva.

Why would Wandy have been an option to fight for silva's belt anyway? He's lost five of his last six fights and has never won a middle weight (or even catchwieght) fight in the UFC.

Because he's fun to watch and is popular amongst fans.

Those are reasons to still be employed, not to challenge for a title.

Under normal conditions, I would agree. When you need to scramble to put together a fight though, sometimes you have to consider a fight that normally you wouldn't...but, at the end of the day, it was merely a consideration, so no harm done.

I'd have no problem with Anderson vs Wanderlei at LHW being the replacement match, but you can't justify Wanderlei being in title contention at this point in any weight class.

It's a shame they let Hendo go. I would have preferred to see him fight Silva then watch Maia pull guard for 25 minutes.

the maia option was the best
now lets pray he doesn't get hurt in the next month

i think we should give wandy some respect here. i'm damn sure he'd take punches from anderson a hell of a lot better then eh.... lets say forest did. it would be a hell of a fight no matter how u sliced it.

Whether or not that's true.... you can't have a guy fighting for a title with so many recent losses. His only recent win was against a inconsistent fringe top ten LHW. He's been knocked out several times and lost to both Rich Franklin and Chuck Liddell, neither of which is in their prime.

I don't think you should fight for a title EVER if you're coming off of even one loss. The only time I would abide that was when BJ Penn fought Matt Hughes after losing to GSP.

rofl, I don't think you're going to have to worry about maia doing anything for 25 minutes except maybe sleeping.
