Dan Henderson, who most recently lost a unanimous decision to UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson in September, may return to the octagon Dec. 29 at UFC 79.

The news come from Bubba The Love Sponge, who recently spoke to Henderson in Las Vegas. The Sirius Satellite Radio host mentioned the encounter during today’s episode of his show, and the news also appeared on the show’s official website, BTLS.com. (MMAjunkie.com is a content-partner site of BTLS.com.)

According to Bubba, Henderson wouldn’t name his possible opponent but did mention that he may be dropping to 185 pounds for the fight. That’s actually news itself. In a post-UFC 77 press conference earlier this month, UFC President Dana White said he wants Henderson to drop to middleweight but that the fighter seemed opposed to the idea.

Henderson has one fight remaining on his current contract, which was acquired when the UFC’s owners purchased PRIDE earlier this year (though not all of the fighters’ contracts were transferable). Although Henderson recently stated he was unhappy with the UFC’s initial offer, he said he was optimistic a deal would be reached.

A new deal would likely need to be in place before the UFC would officially book Henderson for his next fight.

UFC 79 takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and features a main event between UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and former champ Matt Hughes.

Wow. I don't think that Silva would be fighting again this soon, so who could it be? Not Franklin, mabye Okami?

That would be the best card in UFC history.

Sweet, UFC 79 is going to be a great card. I don't care if he moves to 185 or not, I actually rather him stay at 205 because imo he has the best chance of beating Rampage. I know a middleweight showdown with Silva would be sick, but what after that? There would be no one but him and Anderson. And that would be lame.

well, i don't see anybody in the MW division who can beat hendo, except of course silva !!

so, it will be a surprise if silva fight again so soon but he was not injuree against rich and it may be a possibility !!

hughes destroying serra and silva / hendo will be enough for me to be happy !! LOL !!

Give him Cote. I know it is know dream match, but that boy has got a hard head. He might put up quite a fight. And then again, he may not.

My guess on who he'll fight: Marquardt.

that does seem like a likley opp. since he hasnt fought either in a good time and is comin off a the lose to silvia so it would be good to delay hendo vs silvia cause thats really one of the few matchs left to legitemently give anderson a challenge

I think they will make him fight Silva....it's kind of lame considering that they "Unified" the Pride belt once already at a different wieght class using Dan...but sadly repetition does work.

even if henderson had left the belts in japan, the fans would still be calling this a title unification. And the end of the day, silva is on top of his game and looking somewhat invincible right now.. henderson is a great style matchup, and a chin that beat up jackson's fist. I'd love to see this fight.

i hate editing my posts..

if this fight is too soon for silva, what about ortiz? i know hes waiting for his shit to heal, and he probably wants no part in hendo but....?

Well that would ruin his title shot at MW potentially and if he is willing to fight at 185 then do it, dont make him fight Tito for no real reason, if its too soon for Silva then make it a top MW so he can get the title shot early next year

But all in all i think this is a bad idea, they need a guy to fight Silva around February March time so i just think they should give it to Hendo, i know its odd he will have had 2 title fights as his sole ufc fights but he is the most deserving without actually having fought there already

Maybe Hendo VS Leben would be good so he can blitz him and be ready for Silva for March?

I was thinking the exact same thing, it would suck because i like Cote and he would probably get beat faster then his fight with Lutter

The division is a mess tho, you could argue Cote cos he beat Grove who beat Belcher, you could argue Leben cos he beat Martin who beat Salaverry - he also beat Cote by spilt decision, you could argue Belcher cos he beat Starnes who beat Leben, oh wait those have gone full circle and there is no way to work that out quickly, gash

Huge druggie though. Tough to back someone with no moral fiber whatsoever.

That would be the best card in UFC history.

They have obviously confirmed Hughes/Serra & Chuck/Wandy... there's rumored to be Penn/Sherk or Penn/Stevenson... if they had Hendo/Silva... it would not only be the best card in UFC history... it would be the greatest card in all of MMA. Possibly one that could never be matched again.

hmmmmmm...

maybe that "dropping weight class" it's just to keep us out of guessing, he said he wants to stay at 205, and there were some Hendo vs Tito rumors....
just thinking...
