I decided to make cuban sandwiches as a special at my cafe today, and had one for lunch, as I've never eaten one before. It was perhaps the oddest food experience I've ever had. Honestly, I don't like anything on it really, but the combination of stuff was so interesting, I actually really enjoyed it.

So, what are your thoughts on cuban sandwiches?

For folks that don't know, a cuban is ham, a specially seasoned and shredded roast pork, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard, grilled.

The small cafeteria in my building makes them once a week as their special of the day. I agree, it is an odd combination of flavors, but it works for me. I wish I could try one of yours, the cafe here often uses stale bread, dry pork, and their pickles are very suspect.

Yeah, I get bakery fresh bread, made the cuban pork myself over 12 hours, and know the difference between kosher and non-kosher pickles (they probably buy kosher and don't refridgerate them.)

What kind of ham? Deli or like an Easter ham?

Not sure about the traditional one, but I use black forest ham. I'm not sure they even have "deli ham" in Cuba, so I'd guess something a bit more legit.

A Miami native here (100% white by the way) and Cuban Sandwiches are one of the most tastiness sandwiches ever created!

Do yourself a favor and try it out once, you will not regret it.......if so you only wasted about Five bucks.

It sold fairly well, so I'll run it again when I get my sandwich press and see if that makes it even better.

The last cuban I had was out of a sandwich truck and was made with pork belly on what I think was ciabatta. I felt my arteries clogging, but it was spectacular!

Perfect post-Xmas breakfast in Puerto Rico with the leftover pork (roasted pork shoulder is the "turkey" in PR). Sautee that bitch with butter, cheap supermarket ham, extra swiss, hangover gone!

BTW, for those wondering, this is a pic (I think) of the pork belly Cuban I had from Misery Loves Company.

(the original was huge, and don't feel like re-sizing)

Is that cole slaw? Look sort of like a cross between a cuban and a pulled pork sandwich or something.

They were all around when I lived in South Florida. Just really not my thing, they are...ok. Im not a pickle fan or a mustard fan but the roast pork, ham and swiss are good.

Never heard of this. Not even sure you get them in the UK. Sounds goooood though. I like all those ingredients too. Need to source me one locally!

That's really where I fall as well. Pickles maybe, but I rarely like condiments unless it's tons and tons of A-1 sauce.

Funny you ask, we just added a BBQ Cuban to the menu where I work, and it has been selling very well. We do ours on french bread.

I would assume Cuban sandwiches are illegal here in the states - just like Cuban cigars.
