Anthony Pettis is anxious to get back in the cage and settle a newfound rivalry with fellow former WEC fighter Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

The two fighters are on a collision course for a bout later this year, so it’s no longer a matter of if, it’s only a matter of when.

“That is the fight that’s going to happen. We’re currently working, trying to put together the avenue for which they’re going to fight. I would look for an announcement sooner rather than later for when that fight’s going to be,” Pettis’ manager, Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., told MMAWeekly Radio earlier this week.

“Hopefully it’s the sooner the better because Anthony can’t wait to get his hands on him.”

There is going to be no jab and jive and no lnp. I'm taking Pettis, but this is going to be an incredible fight, no matter who wins.

Love it. They're both super tough and like to stand and bang, and their respective ground games are threatening enough to prevent expectation of a standup war. It's what most of us want to see, right, including myself, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Pettis or Cerrone mix in some takedowns with their strikes.

They've both improved their wrestling considerably after figuring out their BJJ guards won't always cut it against the top guys. They need to get top position and maintain it for a strong chance to win.

This is the biggest test for Pettis in his career. Bendo was an instant classic, for sure, but Cerrone is the Terminator - he hasn't been stopped, and it'll take several ninja kicks to do that. Cerrone's also got the range and height on Pettis, so he could likely control distance on the feet. There's 2 wrinkles here, that I see -

1) Who takes it to the ground, if at all

2) If one guy starts controlling the fight and the other fades a bit

Both guys are resilient, they've come back from considerable adversity, but there's also been a fight or two where they've largely let the other guy do their thing (Cerrone against Diaz, Pettis against Guida). It'll be a test of will as much as skill.

I don't think you meant what you typed. Ground games preventing expectation of a stand up war? You mean their ground games will ensure this is a stand up war.

Ah, I may need to clarify. They're both pretty good on the ground, but not so good that I think either of them would fear the other any more than in the standup. It's more in their takedowns and their increasing willingness to use them (especially Pettis). Cerrone's not used takedowns in his last couple fights, but they're still available.

I don't see how Cerrone wins this fight, it all points to Pettis picking Cerrone apart or knocking him out.

Gotta be a hater on this one. Just had enough of Bendo, Cerrone, Pettis and Varner being linked together til the end of time.

God forbid Bendo beats Nate....then the UFC could end up doing yet another version of these WEC LW fights.

I can't wait for this fight to happen. This is match making at it's finest. 2 top 10 LW's that are very exciting to watch.
This has excitement written all over it. The winner of this fight will be close to a title shot shortly down the road.
I wouldn't be surprised if the winner of this got the Nate Diaz/Benson Henderson match sometime in the Spring of 2013.

I hope Pettis beats Cerrone handily.

Cerrone's a very fun to watch, but something about him rubs me the wrong way.....

Don't think it's the hat, since Don Frye has a cowboy hat and I like Don just fine.
It might be the tattoo?
Maybe it's the way Cerrone fought Diaz?
Is it Cerrone's terrible trash talk/ fight building?

I don't know, but I'm not cheering for him.

Moreover, I want Pettis Bendo II

Aww... really? I *love* his tattoo... any guy who goes to that length to convey love for his dearly departed dog gets major points in my book. At least it has personal meaning.

As for the fight - I really like both these guys. At this point it feels like a coin toss for me. I would have thought Cerrone would take this but I still have flashbacks from that trainwreck fight with Nate where he was a human punching bag. :( Not sure how this will play out with Pettis but I'm a fan of both guy's style in the octagon.

You may have hit on something important in why I fail to appreciate his tattoo, or so many others: I simply do not understand.

Did he name is dog Cerrone?

DID COWBOY CHANGE HIS NAME SO IT WOULD MATCH HIS DEAD DOG!?!
Kidding, of course.

Seriously though, I don't understand.

EDIT: Just tried to prop you, DancingDoll, but I'm all out of prop power for the day. I'll get you later.

Pettis will win via being way faster and more explosive. He will hurt Cerrone and win the wrestling.
