11/26/2008 – Within minutes of being released from his UFC obligations, Jorge Gurgel signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce out of San Jose, California.

Coming off a tough blow for blow unanimous decision loss against Aaron Riley in UFC 91 which won “Fight of the Night,” Jorge was issued his official release letter today from the UFC. Immediately Jorge was offered a contract with Strikeforce under undisclosed terms.

At least he found work quickly. With a sub-.500 UFC record he was gone, just a question of when.

agreed, i think the only thing keeping him around was rich's influence, hopefully he'll learn to use his strengths to win a fight instead of trying to prove he's a standup fighter, which he clearly is not.

Y'know, i kinda like Jorge. He totally goes against his strongest weapons in a fight to make it more entertaining for the fans, and hes probably sacrificed a couple of wins make fights more fun for the casual fan. I mean, thats all well and good when it works, but Jorge needs to realise he aint getting anywhere. The way he fights, its like anderson trying to win fights using his wrestling. He needs to start putting some wins together if he wants to get back into the ufc, and the only way hes going to do that is if he starts using his jits.

I like Gurgel. Maybe its a little ohio pride. But i think he can be an exciting fighter. I am frustrated by his style tho. I know the fans might prefer a standup fight. At least thats what he seems to think. However, i am a fan, and personally, im most entertained by someone doing what their best at. If he was more likely to shoot and use his jitz, i think he couldve beat riley. Also, he had to know he wasn't exactly safe in the UFC. So did he just not care? Why not try to use your strengths to potentially save your job. Either way, what i learned is that he is not that interested in fighting as his career. Nothing wrong with that when hes set teaching.

Strikeforce is a much more fitting place for him and I'm sure he'll have more success over there. At least he wont be hurting my MMAPlayground record now

I'm surprised he got cut I figured they were going to keep him around forever with as much of a pass as he kept getting.

I think he'll roll some fools in a smaller org, though. Hopefully he'll actually use his jits

Well on the bright side he says he's going to start using his jiujitsu, just so people will "shut up". He's invested 16 years of his life in BJJ so it's about damned time. He wants to be exciting and that's cool, but jiujitsu can be exciting to, just ask your student Dustin Hazellet.

He's heartbroken he's out of the UFC, and I truely believe him. He wants back in the UFC fighting the best. I think being released will be an eye-opening experience for him.

Now he's going to have to come to the crossroads. Do I want to an exciting brawler, or do I want to be a good MMA fighter?

In all fairness I think his striking was definitely coming along and it showed in his last fight. I give him another year or two of development before he's a legitimate threat to most of the LW division. Again, provided he starts using his jits.

Jorge needed a wake up call. maybe thios will be it. Start destroying guys with your BJJ jorge and you'll be back in the UFC as soon as your Strkiforce contract is up. this guy has so much potential but just doesn't play into his strength!?!?!

Also, why cut him when WEC is also under Zuffa contract?

I had the same thoughts. If Varner runs through Cerrone what is the WEC going to do? They've already done a poor enough job at promoting their lightweight and welterweight belts, and if Condit and Varner win their next matchups they're going to be digging for talent to put in against those guys. Gurgel would have fit well IMO

should've happened like a year ago or more IMO.

I agree. The guy just cannot be coached, or follow a gameplan

I am glad to see Gurgel "land on his feet" i always respected him as a fighter and competitior, i just never thought he truely belonged in the UFC with the "elite"... no pun intended
