Paulo Filho (Pictures) will not defend his WEC middleweight crown against Chael Sonnen (Pictures) on March 26, his manager, Jorge Guimaraes, told Sherdog.com.

"We tried our best with Filho, but it didn't work and he'll not fight in the WEC," Guimaraes said. "He tried with all his effort to accomplish the title defense, but he realized he couldn't do it due to chemical dependence and depression. He knew this kind of stuff does not have a link with the sport, and I'm happy he had a conscience and looked for help."

"The WEC staff was superb with us," the manager added. "They understood the situation, and Filho will return and defend his belt in June. Filho also realized who his real friends are, and he took this lesson seriously. He'll come back victorious from this tough moment and he will be supported, as mentioned, by his real friends."

i still dont see why people insist that sonnen is right, filho was going to snap his arm in 3 places because filho knew he was losing and the ref knew sonnen was in trouble by the screaming thus a verbal tapout, i would hope sonnen would own up and admit filho was not going to let go and his arm was going to be wrecked but knowing him he'll come out just as arrogant and say oh blah blah i didnt tap, this rematch is b/s filho won fair and square, bad performance but a W

How do you figure that? Because he has an addiction, which very well could have lead to the weight and depression problems(see Ricco). I acctually just recieved a glimps into a drug addicts life, it made me sick. I hope Filho gets well.

this rematch is not bs. yes sonnen lost fair and square in my eyes, but he made filho look like crap up until he was submitted. many people, including myself, believe that sonnen deserves another shot.

There is a long list of drugs chemical dependency can cover but steroids is not one of them. Plus he has been tested before so that really narrows the list down heavily. My guess would be either pain pills or heroin. But like I said this is just a guess.

Steroids are absolutely addictive and can cause dependency.

I have to say everything i hear about him sounds like he has depression. I can tell you from experience its a lifelong battle and the only chemical dependency i think he has is from recreational drugs that he is using to counteract his depression. Just my interpretation of news ive heard though.

It's most likely pain killers. Give him a break on the roids. It's absolutely bogus to even bring that up.

Drugs used to treat anxiety and depression are banned substances, so that could be what it is, as hes mentioned he was suffering from depression before. If he can't train without the drugs, and can't pass a drugtest WITH the drugs, it really puts him in a tough spot.

Not sure exactally whats wrong with Filho. But from what I got. He's got some serious depression of some sort. I don't want to sound cold or anything but if the guy can't defend his title don't you think the WEC owes it to its fans to strip him of the title and let someone else fight for it? Then when Filho gets healthy he he gets the first title shot when he's back. That sounds logical to me.

The only thing thats messed up is the obvious fact that Zuffa were trying to force him to fight despite this!

Hope he gets it sorted soon, would it be wrong to hope him and Silva fall out (maybe over this) so they fight eventually?

I think normally they would consider at least having an Interim title fight... but it's prob hard to slide someone in to fight Sonnen on less than a weeks notice...

The new trend in pro sports drug testing is that you don't need a positive test in order to be popped for performance enhancers. Circumstancial evidence is enough but I have never heard of a pro athlete going to rehab so we will see. Filho should absolutley be stripped of the belt. I would love if the NSAC went down to Brazil and make him fill a cup.

PS If my boy Nick Diaz gets a win stripped for the ganja, then Filho needs some consequences for whatever he is on.

telenights said "chemical addiction". There are functional groups on certain drugs that have been clinically shown to be chemically (physically) addictive, mostly if not exclusively of the opioid group.

Addiction also covers psychological addiction, which is associated with steroids (among other drugs)

Good, he was about to lose anyway. His head wasn't right last week when this was rumored so I knew from then on he was going to lose if he fought. But now he'll get better and be back at 100% in June in which he will spank this dude and make him look amateur.
