Amidst word from his manager that Anderson Silva wanted to "take a break from fighting", it's now been confirmed that Silva has a good reason. Elbow surgery means the UFC Middleweight Champion is done fighting in 2009. He's expected to return in early 2010 and face either Dan Henderson or Nate Marquardt for the title.

Maybe, I doubt either one of them would care if it was Interim or not though. I heard Henderson doesn't want this fight to begin with.

I would be pretty pissed if I were Henderson. He was already told he had the shot quite a while ago and they're basically trying to force him to do another contender fight.

I wouldn't mind seeing the fight, but from Hendo's point of view this whole situation is kind of f***ed up.

There's really no point to have an interim title. It's not like this is a Frank Mir motorcycle accident, or Randy Couture dispute that will have him out for a year+.

Interim title is only set up if the current champion hasn't defended his title in 1 year and/or breaks contract agreements or suffers an injury preventing him from defending the title more then 1 year since he last did

Hendo deserves a title shot no matter how long it takes! Anderson faces a tough challenge to defend his belt IMO. Dan then Nate, even if Anderson trys to duck fights! he would probably be better to vacate!

anderson trying to duck fights? that kind of **** belongs on sherdog forums

the thing is Anderson already destroyed both and only has a few fights left in his career and beating two guys again who he already beat doesn't really add to his legacy, so he rather beat the winner and then fight different fighters that he hasn't already faced

No way there is an interim title here! Anderson wil fight ASAP IMO. Henderson and Marquardt need to man up and fight for #1 contender.

How's he ducking a fight?

He has an injury, needs surgery - out for a few months - hardly ducking a fight...

Besides, there was still speculation about whether or not there needed to be a square off between Hendo and Nate to decide who was worthy of the shot.

Yeah, dunno why I said ducking fights
What I meant was the whole fighting at middleweight means his contract gets extended with every win. He will probably vacate and play out his contract at LHW.
