MMARated.com has learned that not only is the July 19th UFC live event on Spike TV official but that the main event will feature Anderson Silva going up against James Irvin. This fight will mark Silva's UFC debut at 205 lbs.

Without official confirmation from the UFC this is true, it's intriguing nevertheless. Irvin will stand in front of Silva, which should make for an interesting exchange. And talk about the UFC bringing out the big guns to compete with Affliction. There is no Liddell or Rampage on the card, but following on the heels of July 5th event, the UFC buzz will already be in the air. This will ostensibly carry forward that momentum enough to drown out interest in Affliction. And while Affliction will be juxtaposed next to the UFC on matters of "what to watch", the choice between paying for people only hardcores have heard of versus the light heavyweight debut of Anderson Silva seems to me a very clear "either-or" proposition.

EDIT1: While confirming to SI.com's Nicki Jhabvala that the UFC will indeed be holding a July 19th event featuring Anderson Silva,

Dana also says Anderson Silva WILL LIKELY FIGHT ON BOTH JULY 19TH AND ON SEPTEMBER 6TH'S UFC 88 CARD. I guess no one is expecting James Irvin to pose much of a threat to the middleweight champ.

EDIT2: From MMA Weekly: In addition to Silva vs. Irvin, a bout between Hermes Franca and Frankie Edgar, initially planned for Aug. 9 in Minneapolis, is being relocated to the July event at the Palms in Las Vegas.

The bout will be Franca’s first since returning from suspension for a positive test for steroids in California.

EDIT3: The event will be dubbed 'Ultimate Fight Night 14' says MMARated.com.......

Haha, thats pretty insane. I hope this doesnt mean andersons out of the fight with okami in the uk event though. It would of been awesome if they'd put hm up against vera since their both debuting at 205.

Stupid, stupid, stupid idea. Just make it a title defense against Okami, or put some other big name or match in there like Franklin/Hendo. Irvin is probably a pretty safe opponent for Silva, but still, he could knock him out with a lucky punch like he did against Houston Alexander, and that would be absolutely disastrous for Anderson and the UFC.

Oh man, Irvin's going into the Hall of Fame. Another Superman punch on the way, Anderson's going down Speer style against the cage and then Irvin's going to go up to him and point and say i told ya so, thats how it goes down

i'm excited and baffled at the same time. why didn't they just get WANDERLEI Silva instead of Anderson. Regardless, it should just be another severed head on Anderson's throne.

He was offered the headline slot, but turned it down citing lack of time to prepare.

love that I get to see Anderson Silva fight for free on tv soon, but dont like the opponent..

Anderson will probably make quick work of him though, but if not it will be really bad for his "legacy" or whatever you wanna call it

this still doesn't compare to fedor vs sylvia.

i think it is retarded for any champion to move up or down in weight while they hold the belt. i know this is just a ploy to cut Affliction's ratings, but even still i don't like it. Anderson should just stay at MW, it really agitates me when this happens

Wow, although Irvin is not the best selection IMO I think it is a pretty big deal that Anderson is fighting @ 205. Although I agree that a fight with Okami would be a better, but regardless, it is pretty big news IMO.

They probably want to test the waters with Anderson fighting at 205.
I think Irvin is a dead man walking.

i hope this is a one time thing for now. i would like to see silva fight the winner of the cote/almeida fight. i think both guys deserve a shot at the spider if they win.

Irvin poses a great threat because he has the tremendous punchin power which is interesting vs anderson's chin but Anderson has the reach and is a smart fighter so i think he will use that and beat Irvin but I'm not sure that is much different than the popular opinion of the site

The bigger news though is that he might be fighting on the 88 card? IF this is true does that mean Anderson is going to try and maintain his belt in the mw division. I hope that's the case because then I will get to see silva fight more

Irvin will definately be outclassed, but he sure as hell has a punchers chance of catching Silva. Interesting. However I believe Affliction will still outsell UFC's PPV's.

LOL. Anything under 200,000 buys would be considered a major flop for the UFC...Affliction will be fortunate to do 50,000. Talent doesn't always translate into money made.

I don't know if this is a credible news source or not, but according to mmapayout.com, UFC 83 drew an estimated 525,000 pay per view buys. Even if this number isn't exactly correct, I don't expect Affliction to come close. But that's ok b/c all the competition is a win/win situation for us mma fans.

What a great move to stole the audience from the first Affliction card !! lol

Go Dana !!

I dont like this move. WHats he going to gain from this? Maybe a fight with rampage or whomever the champ is in like a year or better. And what if irvin "shocks the world!!" Then its a total loss. And to top it off he could get injured and not be able to fight at 88. Then the MW title is inactive. Not that the division in packed with title contenders . so i Geus i'll ride the fence until he fights Rampage/Forrest?chuck?wandy?machida?
