LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Matt Hughes said he was excited and a little relieved when he learned that Chael Sonnen would be sitting next to him at the analyst desk of "UFC Tonight."

Obviously, Hughes is not Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva or a whole host of others – Brazilian and otherwise – whom Sonnen has offended in his tour of trash-talking duty.

No, Hughes is a guy who's uncomfortable talking about subjects he doesn't really care about. He's a guy on loan from his farm in Hillsboro, Ill., where it's planting time. He's a guy who may or may not be fighting again, and he won't be able to talk about it until he hears from UFC president Dana White.

I love watching him get beat up....well, if he does retire, at least he can kill some more bobcats and tweet about it.

Agreed.

I don't really mind watching him get beat up.

One of the greatest of all time.

Its a shame when people bash a legend who's on their way out.

His fights were always entertaining. He's an example of how wrestlers SHOULD fight. No lay and pray for Mr. Hughes.

Apparently, you never saw the Matt Serra & Lytle fight.....if I wanted to bash a "legend" I would choose Andy for his countless boring title fights.

Agreed. It happens just about every time, too.

Hughes can retire easily and not have to worry about finances. He has his farm to keep bringing in the money and keep him busy. But if he was to fight again, I would love to see it. I don't think any fighter in the history of mma has won in spectacular fashion as Hughes.

1. Hughes vs Newton - Hughes was being triangled and it looked like Hughes may have been out when he seemingly slammed Newton unconscious - earning Hughes the victory and the championship.

2. Hughes vs Trigg - Hughes, again, was triangled and was moments away from passing out but manages to break free and picks up Trigg and slams him and eventually taps him out via standing rear naked choke.

3. Hughes vs Penn II - Again, Hughes was triangled and looked to be lifeless but manages to survive until the ending bell rings. In the following round, Hughes spanked Penn via crucifix style and earned the victory stoppage.

4. Hughes vs GSP - Hughes was being ragdolled by GSP and it looked like Hughes was on his way to losing his championship - that is until Hughes miraculously whips up an armbar and taps out GSP.

When we think of comeback fighters, we immediately think of Sakuraba and Big Nog but we tend to forget Hughes had some of the greatest comebacks in mma history.

I said it before....

Bring in Carlos Newton for Hughes' retirement fight. I believe it's fitting because a lot of people felt Hughes vs Newton I had a strange and even controversial ending.

this will never happen as Newton retired. But lets say he didnt, this makes no sense at this point in time. That fight happened 10 years ago and Newton is 5-8 since then. You cannot sell this to the casual fan, let alone a lot of the hardcore fans. Hughes would knock him out in the first round and do nothing for his career/legacy

I'd like to see one more fight. Don't wanna see him go out on that BJ Penn fight. He should fight Fitch

A fight with Newton is likely not to happen but the match up is as good and relevant as any other. Hughes is at the end of his career. Whether he loses or wins his last fight, it will not undermine what he has done during his career. You act as if there is a potential match up that would be more meaningful than the rest. I beg to differ. Hughes could fight whomever and win or lose, the fight would not elevate him or degrade him in any way. So yes, I would like to see Hughes vs Newton again if that is OK with you?

You forgot to mention that Trigg absolutely BLASTED Hughes in the nuts (which the ref missed) and then blitzed him with a combo. That was and is one of the most amazing comebacks of all time.

My favorite Matt Hughes fight though was Hughes vs Sakurai. The ground and pound in that fight was disgusting (in a good way.)

Two final notes:

1) @KFM Hughes already rematched Newton and beat him convincingly.

2) @ Chael__Sonnen..... no Chael Sonnen nuthugger can ever accuse someone of lay and pray. That guy is the epitome of lay and pray. Its the only thing he's good at.

no its not OK with me

As BJJ pointed out, Hughes rematched Newton 7 months later and won via TKO in the 4th round. A fight now would look even worse. Royce Gracie was calling for a rematch last year, why not have this as Hughes' retirement match? It's just as competitive.

you underestimate the non-hardcore audience of MMA. Hughes getting KTFO again or beating a can will do nothing in the eyes of many. Take Fedor for example. He is the greatest HW of all time, arguably the GOAT of all MMA fighters (imo he is), but yet he has been scrutinized and bashed every which way since the loss to Werdum. Everything he has done in the past has been undermined by the events over the last 2 years by a large population. Hell, even some hardcore fans rip on Fedor too, and IMO Fedor has had a better career than Hughes.

I'm not a fan of Hughes, but I would like to see him go out with his hand raised over someone fans actually know like Lytle did and not they way Cro Cop, Liddell and Couture left the sport.
