Top UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery following an incident in a Las Vegas casino soon after his UFC 141 bout this past month.

According to the "Las Vegas Review-Journal," Overeem is slated to appear in court on Feb. 21, and if convicted, he faces a maximum of six months in county jail and a maximum $1,000 fine.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) had been unable to confirm the long-rumored incident in recent weeks.

Overeem pushed or shoved a woman in the face, "causing her to stagger back."

A misunderstanding perhaps? Sounds like he was actually trying to heal her.

Is this really a shocker? We already know how he treats little girls...

Wow... I didn't know that a push causing someone to "stagger back" was grounds for battery charges.

Lawyers need to be staking out nightclubs for potential clients, especially around the 3am mark, like at this casino. They would clean up...

Of course, we don't know all the facts, but based on reading this article, it looks a little over the top. We'll have to wait for the civil lawsuit that will probably be creeping around the corner on this case... $$

No dude should ever hit or push or do anything harmful to a girl. Completely ridiculous.

ACTUALLY....no person should ever hit or push or do anything to another HUMAN...no matter if it is a guy or girl.

Only in self defense should we use violence against another human being. No matter if it is a girl or guy.

We don't know what this woman did to him first though. Maybe she slapped him or something.

Touching another human being in a violent manner is completely illegal...no matter if it is a push or a finger poke or whatever. In NY, shoving another human being can get a you a 2nd degree aggravated harassment charge.

If she hit him first I think the whole thing should be squashed or they both should be charged. If she didn't touch him in any way I think Overeem should be charged.

I feel that violence in our society is taken too lightly. If I made the laws you wouldn't want to ever put your hands on another human being. Unless of course you were defending yourself. There would be no slaps on the wrist.

We don't know what happened here though...like I said she may have slapped him or hit him in some way first.

Many modern women feel they can hit a guy without any repercussions.

I would imagine Alcohol was a contributing factor in this. It usually is.

I wonder if Overeem being 260 pounds and at least 4x the size of her had anything to do with her "staggering back" with a little push

or she could be a soccer player

Unless I am misinterpreting you and buffalodave, these are some good electricity based puns. Most people are resistors when it comes to puns and sometimes I am too, but I find that when you throw the switch there is always the potential to get amped up beyond your expected capacitance. Currently, the circuit of punny jokes is drained (exponentially) from this coupling of playground users, so everyone will need to step up their efforts to induce more charging discussions.
I hope this is a small misunderstanding and Overeen isn't throwing chicks around.

The only time I would harm a women was if she did something to my nieces or nephews and believe me, harm is the nicest thing I would do, other then that, women are off limits.

At the same time, when a women is in your face, slapping you and going for your face, the only thing a man can do is restrain her or push her away and even that can be cause for arrest.

I had this tweaker chick start clawing my face at a party and I had to get some of my lady friends to grab her cuz all I could do was throw an elbow to get her off she was so close and I didn't wanna do that. Thank god those ladies were close cuz it coulda got outta hand

Well done, sir. But I'm afraid that I'm charged with the task of spreading the love at the moment.

Oh and no misinterpretation at all.

Battery is a lot easier to commit than people think. It is basically an intentional, unconsented offensive touching. If you intentionally touch someone in a way they find offensive, like grabbing someone by the arm, you have committed battery. Which is why it is a simple misdemeanor.

As far as the civil suit, to get any money from a battery, there has to be damages. The question then becomes has the woman been injured in a way that a jury will accept, and/or was the the battery so outrageous to justify punitive damages to a jury. Unless she got whiplash from the face push or has some bruising that is documented, there is not much chance that there will be any injury worth suing over, although a desperate personal injury lawyer (aka a bad personal injury lawyer) might try.

It doesn't sound like he really 'harmed' her, but more like he wanted to 'restrain her' or remove her from the situation if she was face-palmed and pushed back. Now, I'm totally reading into something I have no facts on, but It doesn't say that she was injured and honestly if it was me at 3am and Overeem pushed me with any real purpose or conviction I should have gone flying across the casino or at least been knocked hard to the ground, rather than 'staggering back'. It just doesn't seem like he was wilfully intending to be violent. Not making excuses for the guy, but if he really wanted to make an impact, it's not very hard to do at his size, and it doesn't sound like she's hurt. it could have been some rowdy drunken fan at 3am getting in his face etc. Anyway... I'm sure it'll sort itself out either way.

Obviously I don't advocate violence against anyone, but if a woman gets violent towards a guy first, he should have the right to defend himself or restrain her with the goal of ending the violence or harassment... (similar to what a police officer does). I have one female friend that gets drunk and always looks to pick fights and argue nose-to-nose with guys at bars and she just keeps pushing it until another female friend ends up dragging her away. It's not cool for anyone to just have to deal with that and have their night ruined because it's carte blanche to act like the renegade tough-chick that's above the law. Again, not saying that excuses laying a hand on anyone.... but both genders should feel protected from physical/verbal harassment on an equal footing.

Has anyone seen "In Bruges": I don't hit women. I would never hit a woman, Chloƫ. I'd hit a woman who's trying to hit me with her bottle, that's different, that's self defense, isn't it? ...Or a woman who could do karate. I would never hit a woman generally............

don't know the full facts of this yet so ill wait to read more, but being its 3 am in a vegas club, there are a lot of variables yet to be seen

Alistair Overeem is always assaulting people at clubs. It's why he's one of my favorites.
