Two Top Fight Night 133 Predictions

Posted by apollomma Wednesday, July 11, 2018 10:29 AM

Coming on the heels of an epic UFC 226, can UFC Fight Night 133 hold a candle to the kind of glory we saw with DC getting the big knockout win over Stipe Miocic and Derrick Lewis getting the unexpected win of Francis Ngannou?

Century Link Arena in Boise Idaho may not be the most exciting venue on the planet, but this main event is great. Not because we are going to see a matchup between two legendary warriors, but because we get to see Junior dos Santos back in the ring again. That said there is some excitement to be had on the rest of the card as well.

Junior dos Santos vs. Blagoy Ivanov

I don’t have a whole lot of information on the Bulgarian. He is a world champion sambo practitioner and former World Series of Fighting heavyweight champ. And according to Global-MMA, he is the #2 heavyweight outside of the UFC, so the guys are no slouch.

But what I have seen from the small amount of tape that I have watched of him, is he looks a little bit sloppy. At least compared to a crisp, polished fighter like dos Santos. This is also his UFC debut so that nerves could play into this fight. This might be slightly ignorant of me to say, but I feel like the best thing Ivanov has going for him (other than the fact he is a powerhouse over 250 pounds) is that Junior has taken some time off and might have a little bit of octagon-rust.

The bit of ring rust might be what drags this fight out a little longer. JDS might take his time sizing up his opponent, but his resume is just too good. Junior has been in the ring with the very best of the best: Fabricio Werdum, Cain Velasquez, Overeem, Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, and Stipe Miocic, just to name a few. Ivanov has a well-rounded 16-1 record, but the level of competition isn’t even comparable.

Remember how I mentioned ‘sloppy’? IfBlagoy manages to get into the later rounds, this will haunt him against a guy like JDS. Once fatigue sets in, ‘sloppy’ will become a full-on hot mess and Junior dos Santos will absolutely pick him apart. Surprisingly enough, JDS is less than a two to one favorite (-185), so there is some serious value in dropping a couple of bucks on him. Prediction: Junior dos Santos

Chad Mendes vs. Myles Jury

Chad Mendes is a world-class wrestler. But wrestling isn’t the only thing that Mendes has going for him though. Sure, the first part of his career was built on it, but after some time, he got much more comfortable standing up and started racking up the knockouts.
