Roman Zentsov - The Russian Hammer
Roman “The Russian Hammer” Zentsov was born on September 10th, 1973 in Bryansk, Russia. After training extensively his entire life in many different styles of contact fighting, Zentsov began his boxing career in 2002 with a tough loss due to knock out to Sergey Dychkov. Undeterred, Zentsov pushed forward for two professional boxing wins in subsequent years.
Zentsov had a rough start as a professional mixed martial artist, losing six of his first ten fights with various organizations and promotions in Russia and abroad. He was widely criticized for not being able to take a punch and commentators suggested that, despite his obvious fighting ability, Zentsov simply could not excel so long as he were so easily knocked out.
After losing all four professional matches that he fought in 2004 and 2005, Zentsov began the hottest streak of his career, winning seven fights in a row with promotions such as M-1 and PRIDE Fighting Championships. That streak ended on July 14th, 2007 when he lost to Brandon Lee Hinkle due to a unanimous decision at a Bodog Fighting event. Rumors circulated that Zentsov would retire after that fight but he declared publicly in August of 2007 that he would continue to fight with both Bodog and PRIDE.
