Phil Baroni - The New York Bad Ass
Phil “The New York Bad Ass” Baroni was born on April 16th, 1976 in New York City, New York. After spending his college years wrestling, body building, and earning a degree in psychology, Baroni went on to become a successful amateur kickboxer, winning all seven of his matches. Baroni proceeded to take up boxing, winning all ten of his bouts in that sport as well.
It wasn’t long before Baroni was picked up by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. After splitting his first few fights, “The New York Bad Ass” was able to knock out former UFC champion Dave Menne in 2002. Things went downhill from here for Baroni’s UFC career as he lost successive matches to Matt Lindland, Evan Tanner, and unknown fighter Pete Sell. After being encouraged by many people, including UFC CEO Dana White, to retire, Baroni moved on to the PRIDE organization instead.
Baroni managed several great victories early on into his time with PRIDE, securing knockout victories over Ikuhisa Minowa, Ryo Chonan, Yuki Kondo, and Yosuke Nishijima. His brewing beef with Frank Shamrock resulted in EliteXC and Strikeforce arranging a bout between the two. Shamrock won the fight easily with a rear naked choke in the second round, securing a TKO.
