While a fiery temper isn’t usually an advantage in professional fighting, Edward Benson “Short Fuse” Herman is most certainly an exception to that rule. Born on October 2nd, 1980 this Vancouver, Washington native grew from a sporadic street fighter to a well-trained mixed martial artist is just a few short years.
After fighting with various promotions and winning the majority of his bouts during the early part of his career, Herman was invited by management of the Ultimate Fighting Championship to appear as a contestant on the third season of Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter. Training under Ken Shamrock, Herman won his preliminary match against Danny Abaddi with a submission due to arm bar. A fight with Rory Singer followed and Herman forced yet another submission, this time by rear naked choke. That win secured his place in the final match; he went on to lose to Kendall Grove by unanimous decision. Despite the loss, UFC CEO Dana White offered Herman a contract based on his outstanding performance.
Herman’s time with the UFC began shakily with a submission loss versus Jason MacDonald after MacDonald was able to secure a triangle choke in the first round. After two consecutive losses, Herman went on to win his next two matches, evening his UFC record.
