One of the original Ultimate Fighting Championship contestants, Don “The Predator” Frye was born on November 23rd, 1965. After beginning wrestling during his freshman year at Arizona State University under then-coach Dan Severn, Frye won both the freestyle and Greco-Roman events while attempting to qualify for the Olympics.
1995 saw Frye training his former coach Dan Severn for the Ultimate Ultimate 1995 event and Severn returned the favor when he helped Frye prepare for this Ultimate Fighting Championship debut a year later at UFC 8. Frye fought three different fighters that night, dispatching them all in just over three minutes and winning the tournament. Frye immediately became a fan favorite and he returned for UFC 9, winning over Amaury Bitetti and continuing on to be victorious in six of his first seven UFC bouts.
Frye signed a contact with the PRIDE promotion in 2001, winning most of his initial fights, including a bout with rival Ken Shamrock. After gaining a tremendous amount of popularity within the PRIDE organization, Frye lost several fights in a row, ending his time with PRIDE. A contact was quickly signed with the K1 promotion, and his losing ways continued. Frye helped form and began to coach the Tucson Scorpions of the International Fight League in 2007.
